Why it matters

Provisioning a desk phone ensures inbound and outbound calls route correctly through Whippy Business Phone. Completing both the SIP credential setup in Whippy and the device configuration allows the phone to register securely and function as expected.

Key Concepts

Whippy Business Phone: Whippy’s internet-based phone system used for inbound and outbound calling, voicemail, and call routing.

SIP domain: The domain the desk phone uses to register with Whippy Business Phone.

Credential attachment: A mapping between a SIP domain and the credentials used for SIP authentication.

SIP user: The individual Business Phone SIP account (username and password) the desk phone uses to register.

Desk phone web interface: The browser-based configuration panel used to enter SIP details on the Grandstream device.

Account name: The label displayed on the desk phone to identify the SIP line.

  1. In Whippy, go to Accounts, then Account Settings.

  2. Create a SIP domain.

  3. Create a credential attachment and select the SIP domain and credential list.

  4. Open the Users tab and select Add SIP User.

  5. Enter a SIP username and password, then select the credential list and assign the SIP user to a Whippy Business Phone channel.

  6. Power on the Grandstream desk phone.

  7. Locate the phone’s IP address from the device menu.

  8. Open a browser and navigate to the phone’s IP address to access the web interface.

  9. Log in using the default password listed in the Grandstream device documentation.

  14. Enter the SIP Password.

  15. Save and apply the settings.

  16. Confirm the phone shows the account as registered.

  17. Place an inbound call to verify the phone rings.

  18. Place an outbound call to confirm successful registration.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Double-check the SIP username and password in Whippy before entering them on the phone.

  • Ensure your computer and the desk phone are on the same network when accessing the web interface.

  • Allow several seconds after saving for the phone to re-register.

  • Refer to the Grandstream device manual for model-specific interface or password differences.
