Why it matters

Auto-provisioning allows Poly desk phones to pull all required Whippy Business Phone settings automatically. This removes the need to manually configure SIP details on each line and ensures phones stay up to date when users, extensions, or routing change.

Key Concepts

Whippy Business Phone: Whippy’s internet-based phone system for inbound and outbound calling, voicemail, and call routing.

Auto-provisioning link: A unique URL generated in Whippy Business Phone that delivers configuration settings to the desk phone.

Provisioning server: The field in the Poly phone’s web interface where the auto-provisioning link is entered.

Web interface: The browser-based configuration tool used to manage the Poly device.

Reboot: Restarting the phone so it fetches updated configuration from Whippy Business Phone.

Step-by-Step: Connect a Poly Phone to Whippy Business Phone Auto-Provisioning

  1. Open the Poly phone’s IP address in a web browser.

  2. If Chrome blocks the page, use Safari or another browser that allows access to local device pages.

  3. Proceed through any security warnings to reach the device interface.

  4. Log in using the phone’s admin password.

  5. In Whippy, go to Account Settings.

  6. Confirm your SIP domain, credential list, credential attachment, SIP users, and extensions are already configured for Whippy Business Phone.

  7. Go to Auto-Provisioning.

  8. Generate an auto-provisioning link for the Poly device.

  9. Copy the generated link.

  10. Return to the Poly web interface and open the Provisioning Server settings.

  11. Paste the auto-provisioning link into the provisioning URL field.

  12. Save the configuration.

  13. If needed, clear any existing provisioning entries or reset them to default before adding the new link.

  14. Reboot the phone to trigger retrieval of the Whippy Business Phone configuration.

  15. If the phone does not update, unplug and reconnect the power to force another check.

  16. After reboot, confirm that users, extensions, and soft keys appear as expected.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Use Safari if Chrome blocks access to the phone’s local web interface.

  • Copy the entire auto-provisioning URL exactly, without extra spaces.

  • Always reboot after saving provisioning changes.

  • Reset provisioning settings if the phone was previously connected to another phone system.

  • Keep SIP users and extensions updated in Whippy; phones will pull updates after each reboot.
