Why it matters
When you send links in messages, long URLs can look messy, break in SMS, or reduce trust. Whippy automatically shortens and tracks links so they are clean, reliable, and measurable, without requiring any setup or third-party tools. You do not need to use external link shorteners such as Bitly or TinyURL.
Key Concepts
Link tracking (default): Whippy automatically replaces links with tracked, shortened versions. This is enabled by default.
Per-contact link: Each link sent is uniquely generated per contact and conversation to ensure accurate tracking.
Shortened link: A compact version of your original URL that is easier to send and display in messages.
Tracked link: A Whippy-generated link that records clicks before redirecting to the original URL.
Redirect: The process of sending the contact from the shortened link to the original destination.
Default domain: A Whippy-owned domain used for links unless you select a custom domain.
Custom domain: Your own branded domain used instead of the default Whippy domain for tracked links.
Step-by-Step: Send a Link in Whippy
Open a conversation, campaign, or sequence.
Paste a link into your message.
Send the message.
Whippy automatically detects the link.
A unique tracked link is generated for that contact.
The link is replaced with a shortened version.
The contact receives the shortened link.
When clicked, the contact is redirected to the original URL.
What Your Contacts Receive
When you send a long link, Whippy automatically converts it before delivery.
Example:
What you send: https://microsoftbookings.com/schedule/very-long-link-123456
What your contact receives: https://whippylinks.com/abc123
The link is shorter and cleaner
It will not break or be cut off in messages
It always redirects to the original destination
What You See vs What the Contact Sees
In Whippy, you may still see the original long URL
The contact receives the shortened tracked link
Whippy does not show the tracked link in your view to prevent:
accidental clicks
incorrect analytics tracking
This difference is expected behavior
Original Link that was sent:
What the contact actually receives:
How It Works
Link tracking is enabled by default for all organizations
No setup is required
No third-party tools (such as Bitly) are needed
Whippy replaces links automatically when messages are sent
Each link is unique per contact and conversation
Each click is recorded and can be used for analytics or automations
Where This Works
Link shortening and tracking apply to:
Conversations
Channels / Locations
Campaigns
Sequences
Automated messages (including agents)
Use a Custom Domain (Optional)
You can replace the default Whippy domain with your own branded domain.
Example:
links.yourcompany.comorsms.yourcompany.comDo not use your main/root domain (for example,
yourcompany.com)The domain must be configured for Links
This is covered in this demo
Track Clicks and Create Reusable Links
Links are automatically shortened when sent in messages.
If you want to:
track performance across multiple sends
view analytics for a specific link
reuse the same tracked link outside Whippy
You can create a tracked link in:
Settings → Link Settings (or Campaigns → Links)
Paste your destination URL and generate a tracked link to:
view click analytics
reuse the same link
apply UTM parameters or previews
Control When Link Tracking Is Applied
Link tracking is enabled by default, but you can turn it off if needed.
You can disable it at:
Organization level
Location or channel level
Campaign level
Sequence level
When disabled:
Links are sent as original URLs
No shortening occurs
Click tracking and analytics are not recorded
Tips and Best Practices
Leave link tracking enabled to ensure links are clean and reliable
Use a custom domain for branded, trusted links
You do not need to use external tools like Bitly for shortening links
Use tracked links when you want to measure engagement or reuse links
Test a message to confirm how links appear to recipients
