Why it matters
Shareable tracked links let you track engagement for a specific URL both inside and outside Whippy. You can control how the link looks, where it routes, and what data is collected. This is useful for campaigns, external sharing, and consistent tracking across channels.
Key Concepts
Shareable link: A tracked link generated in Whippy that can be used outside the platform.
Original URL: The destination link you want users to visit.
Tracked link: A Whippy-generated link that records clicks before redirecting to the original URL.
Message link: A tracked link generated per contact and conversation when sending messages in Whippy.
Slug: The unique identifier at the end of the tracked link; can be custom or auto-generated.
UTM parameters: Tags added to a URL to track traffic sources in external analytics tools.
Social preview card: A visual preview of a link that includes a title, description, and image.
Link Settings: The area in Whippy where you create and manage tracked links.

Original URL vs Shareable Link
The original URL is the destination page. The shareable link is the tracked version created by Whippy.
When a contact clicks the shareable link:
Whippy records the click
The contact is redirected to the original URL
If you send the original URL inside Whippy:
It will automatically be converted into a tracked message link
Tracking and analytics still apply
Shareable Link vs Message Link
Shareable link:
Reusable
Not tied to a contact, conversation, campaign, or sequence
Can use a custom slug
Designed for use outside Whippy
Message link:
Generated per contact and conversation
May be tied to a campaign or sequence
Always uses a random slug
Used to power tracking events and automations
Important:
Even shareable links are replaced when sent inside Whippy messages
Each send creates a unique tracked link for that contact
When to Use Shareable Links
Use shareable tracked links when:
Sharing links outside Whippy (for example, in external emails or ads)
You want consistent tracking for a specific URL
You need a reusable tracked link across multiple channels
You want control over the link structure and appearance
Custom Slug vs Generated Slug
Custom slug
Human-readable (for example, yourdomain.com/demo)
Easier to recognize and share
Must be unique
Generated slug
Automatically created by Whippy
Random and unique
Faster to set up
Add UTM Parameters
UTM parameters help track where traffic comes from in tools like Google Analytics.
Supported fields:
utm_source
utm_medium
utm_campaign
utm_term
utm_content
When a contact clicks the link:
Whippy records the click
The user is redirected with UTM parameters attached
External tools can attribute traffic correctly
Add a Social Preview Card
You can customize how your link appears when shared on supported platforms.
Add:
Title
Description
Image
This may create a preview when the link is shared in messaging apps or social platforms.
Social Preview Behavior and Limitations
Social preview cards depend on the platform and may not always display.
Limitations include:
Some platforms do not support custom previews
Some platforms cache previews and do not update immediately
Some previews only load if sender and recipient are saved contacts
Display formats vary across apps and devices
Do not rely on preview cards for critical information.
How Shareable Links Behave Inside Whippy
If you send a shareable link inside Whippy:
Whippy replaces it with a message-specific tracked link
The new link is tied to the contact and conversation
Clicks are still recorded correctly
This ensures tracking, automations, and analytics work as expected.
Tips and Best Practices
Use custom slugs for important or frequently shared links
Keep slugs short and easy to understand
Use a branded domain to improve trust and click-through rates
Use consistent UTM naming conventions across campaigns
Test links before sharing them widely
Test social previews on the platforms where the link will be used
Troubleshooting
Issue | Possible Cause | Fix |
Shareable link not tracking clicks | Link tracking disabled or domain issue | Ensure link tracking is enabled and domain is configured |
Custom slug not saving | Slug already in use | Choose a unique slug |
Link uses wrong domain | Domain not selected or not configured | Select a valid domain configured for links |
Shareable link changes in messages | Whippy replaces links inside messages | This is expected behavior |
UTM parameters not showing in analytics | Parameters missing or incorrect | Recheck UTM fields and test link |
Social preview not displaying | Platform limitation or caching | Test on another platform or generate a new link |
