Writable Assignments for HMH Into Reading

HMH Into Reading is built around 12 curricular modules of instruction of three weeks each. Into Reading’s learning model provides daily opportunities for instruction in close reading and comprehension skills, writing in response to text, and process writing. During Reading Workshop for grades 3-6, students read a variety of genre texts in the MyBook. Writable contains writing prompts and assignments for each lesson and module in Into Reading. Below is a sample unit of instruction for Into Reading, and corresponding Writable assignments:

  • MyBook Daily Lesson Writing in Response to Text

  • End of Module Performance Task

  • Writer’s Workshop

Daily Lesson Writing in Response to Text

Response to Text Assignments are an excellent choice for:

  • Providing daily opportunities for writing in response to reading.

  • Finding a variety of tasks for students to demonstrate their understanding of the lesson.

At the end of each lesson in the Mybook, students are asked to demonstrate their understanding of the text while citing textual evidence to support their response. Each lesson’s writing prompt has been recreated in Writable, allowing you to incorporate Writable’s AI student supports and rubrics into your daily lesson. Writable provides side by side reading and writing, allowing students to revisit the text and annotations while gather their evidence for their response.

End of Module Performance Tasks

Module Performance Tasks are an excellent choice for:

  • Students reflecting and synthesizing information from multiple texts in a module, especially if working through all lessons in order.

  • Building in additional opportunities for expository and argument writing.

  • Common writing assessment or benchmarks to monitor student progress on genre skills throughout the year.

Every module in Into Reading is organized around a common theme and Essential Question introduced in the Module Launch, with a different disciplinary focus for each module. Each lesson and writing task helps students deepen understanding of the module theme. At the end of the module, students are presented with a performance task, asking them to revisit each MyBook text, synthesize information learned into a culminating performance task, with a focus on expository or argument writing. Performance tasks can provide valuable information on students' understanding and application of content learned throughout a module, and an indicator of genre writing progress.

Writing Workshop

Each module of Into Reading contains one process writing performance task, broken into fifteen daily lessons for three weeks of writing instruction. Writing Workshop prompts align with and reinforce the concepts and skills taught during reading workshop, and are intended to guide and scaffold students throughout the entire writing process. Writing Workshop provides instructional resources, mentor texts, and anchor charts to explicitly teach and model the writing process. Instructional best practices include targeted feedback on rubrics, opportunities for peer review and revisions, and needs based small group support and conferencing. Writable can support teachers' goals in each of these key areas for Writer’s Workshop.

Writable’s HMH Into Reading assignment collections, you’ll find one assignment for each Writing Workshop module of instruction.

Writer’s Workshop assignments are intended to guide and scaffold students through each stage of the writing process, and provide all instructional resources in a single place. Assignments included anchor charts to explicitly teach skills, student models, and other resources found in your Writer’s Workshop Teacher’s Guide. Assignments include student friendly rubrics allowing students to complete peer review to guide revision, or teachers to provide targeted feedback for students.
