If you can't find an assignment in the Explore library, or you would like to build an assignment hands-on, use the Custom Assignment wizard.

Have a topic in mind, but not sure where to start?

Get an AI-assist by using the High 5 Quick Write, Read & Write Essay, Knowledge Building, or Book Journey wizards instead of creating a custom assignment.

  1. From the 'Create' page, choose 'Custom Assignment' on the left side.

  2. Choose the type of assignment you'd like to create and the basic format you'd like the assignment to have. Then click 'Next'.

For this example, we'll create a "Plan & Write" Assignment, with a graphic organizer and essay section.

  3. Add your reading(s) by clicking 'Add Readings'. You can paste text or upload a PDF as a reading passage. If you decide not to include a reading, click 'Skip this Step'.

  4. Write your prompt in the text box. Then click 'Next'.

  5. If you included a Planning section, you'll be prompted to select an organizer. Click 'Browse Organizers' to choose a graphic organizer for your assignment. Once you've selected an organizer, click 'Next'.

  6. Click 'Choose Rubric' to open the Rubric Explorer.

  7. In 'Explore Rubrics' you can use the filters on the left side to narrow down your results by language (Spanish or English), grade band or level, genre, and scale. For more information on finding a rubric click here.

  8. Click on a rubric to expand and view its details. To add the rubric to the assignment click 'Use Rubric'. To copy and make adjustments to a rubric follow these directions.

  9. (Optional) Review feedback on your assignment prompt to improve your AI suggested feedback, including comments and scores. You can edit the prompt directly to make improvements as needed and then click 'Next'.

  10. Finally, give your assignment a title. Your assignment should have a different title from the other assignments you've saved to 'My Assignments' and should be student-friendly. Click 'Finish' to save your assignment.

Tip! Including the grade level, class, or year in your assignment title can help you locate assignments more quickly.
