Banzai strictly complies with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) to protect the privacy and personal data of young learners. To comply with federal regulations, Banzai does not collect personally identifiable information (such as first and last names) from students under the age of 13.
For students aged 13 and older, first and last names are collected strictly for classroom identification and grading within the teacher portal—never for marketing, profiling, or third-party data sharing.
How Students Appear on Your Roster
Depending on the age a student selects when registering their account, their profile displays differently in your class:
Students Under 13 (Ages 12 and younger): Display with a username only across your Students tab, Gradebook, and activity reports. Their real names are never collected or stored.
Students 13 and Older: Display with their first name, last name, and username, making them easy to match with your school's official roster.
What to do if an older student only displays a username
If a student aged 13 or older appears on your roster with only a username, they accidentally selected 12 or younger when creating their account.
Because federal privacy laws prohibit attaching personal names to accounts registered under age 13, their name cannot be added retroactively to that profile.
To resolve this:
Have the student sign out of Banzai.
Direct them to sign up again using your class code.
Ensure they select their correct age range (13 or older) during registration and enter their first and last name.
Once the new profile appears on your roster, you can remove the old username-only profile from your class. (See Step 2 of this article.)
