Overview

Audience filters are a powerful tool to segment your contacts based on specific behaviours, attributes, or interactions. With filters, you can target the right audience for your emails, SMS, and campaign messaging, leading to more relevant communication and better results.

What Are Filters?

Filters allow you to apply specific conditions to your contact database to identify a precise group of fans. They can be used to create one-off filtered views or to form the basis of saved segments.

You can filter by:

  • Event attendance (registered or attended specific events)

  • Tags (e.g. VIP, contest entrants, genre interests)

  • Location (city, state, country)

  • Email/SMS activity (opened, clicked, didn’t open)

  • Ticket purchase history

  • Custom fields (e.g. gender, music preference)

Common Filter Use Cases

  • Target ticket buyers not subscribed to a list

  • Find fans who didn’t open a specific email

  • Identify users who registered for multiple or specific events

  • Retarget engaged fans based on past actions

  • Clean your list by suppressing unsubscribed users

How Do Filters Differ From Segments

While filters and segments work closely together in Audience Republic, they serve different purposes:

  • Filters are conditions you apply to your contact database to find a specific group of people based on criteria like event attendance, tags, location, or email engagement. Filters are flexible and can be used temporarily or modified at any time.

  • Segments are saved groups created using a specific set of filters. These are dynamic, meaning they automatically update as your audience data changes. For example, if you create a segment of fans who attended a past event, new attendees who meet that filter in the future will be automatically added.

In short:

  • Use filters to segment your audience.

  • Save that filtered group as a segment to keep it dynamic and reusable.

How to Access and Use Filters

  1. Go to Audience Manager

  2. Click on Filters

  3. Choose filters based on the criteria you need:

    • Email/SMS activity

    • Event participation

    • List subscription status

    • Tags

    • Custom fields (e.g. genres, country)

    • Suppression status

  4. Combine filters using AND/OR logic

  5. Review your filtered audience and optionally save it as a segment

  • Campaign registration

Combining Filters (AND vs. OR)

  • AND = Contacts must meet all criteria
    e.g., Opened email AND purchased ticket

  • OR = Contacts can meet any of the criteria
    e.g., Registered for Event A OR Event B

You can toggle AND/OR between filters for more flexibility.

Best Practices

  • Use AND/OR Logic Wisely – Combine filters with AND to narrow or OR to broaden your audience.

  • Automate with Tags – Automatically tag contacts based on actions to save time and simplify filtering.

  • Exclude Effectively – Use suppression filters (e.g. unsubscribed, recent buyers) to improve targeting.

  • Save Frequent Filters as Segments – Turn commonly used filters into dynamic, auto-updating groups.

  • Clean Your List Regularly – Filter out suppressed or bounced contacts to maintain a healthy database.

  • Choose ALL vs. ANY Carefully – Use ALL for exact matches across events, ANY for broader reach.

Special Filter Options

Registered to All vs Any

  • All = Contact must match all selected items

  • Any = Contact must match at least one

Example:

  • "Registered to all selected events" = fewer, highly engaged fans

  • "Registered to any selected events" = broader group

Subscribed to Any/All/None of List

Helpful for excluding or isolating ticket buyers not on a list.

Using filters effectively ensures you target the right fans with the right message - boosting campaign performance and keeping your database clean and organised.
