Design settings in activities with Designer

Configure the appearance of activities in a course with Designer.

When you select the Designer format, each activity gets additional design settings. These allow you to adjust visibility of activity elements, change module purposes, configure backgrounds, add masks, set text styles, and control how activities appear in the secondary menu.

Note: The available options for size, position, and their custom fields follow standard CSS notation.


Available settings

Activity elements visibility styles

Decide which activity elements should be shown and how they behave.

  • Activity icon – Displays the activity's icon.

  • Activity visits – Displays activity views of the user.

  • Activity call to action – Displays a prompt to open the activity.

  • Activity title – Displays the activity's title.

  • Activity description – Displays the activity's description. Can only be displayed if "Display description on course page" is enabled.

  • Activity mod name – Shows the activity’s type (e.g. page, quiz).

  • Activity completion badge - Displays completion badge which shows if the activity is completed or not.

Options for each element:

  • Hide – Hides the element.

  • Show – Displays the element.

  • Show on hover – Displays element only when hovered.

  • Hide on hover – Hides element only when hovered.

  • Remove – Completely removes the element.

Note: Hiding instead of removing can help keep icon placement consistent.

Module purposes (Pro only)

Change the purpose of the activity manually. Default options are:

  • Administration

  • Assessment

  • Collaboration

  • Communication

  • Content

  • Other

  • Interactive content

Module background styles (Pro only)

Configure the activity background on the course or section page.

  • Background image

    Upload an image via file picker or drag-and-drop. Enable "Use different background for completion" to add a different image for completion.
    Supported types: jpeg, png

  • Background position

    Choose where the background is focused.
    Options: Initial, Left top, Left center, Left bottom, Right top, Right center, Right bottom, Center top, Center center, Center bottom, Custom

  • Custom background position

  • Background size

    Available options for background size are:

    • Auto – The background image is displayed in its original size.

    • Cover – Resize the background image to cover the entire container, even if it has to stretch the image or cut a little bit off one of the edges.

    • Contain – Resize the background image to make sure the image is fully visible.

    • Custom – Opens text field for custom background size.

  • Custom background size

  • Background repeat

    Decide if the image repeats.

  • Background gradient

    Enter a gradient or open the gradient modal by clicking the text field for configuration.

Module background MASK styles (Pro only)

Apply a mask image on top of the background.

  • Mask image
    Select a mask image.
    The mask images have to be uploaded in the global settings.

  • Mask position

    Choose where the mask image is focused.
    Available options are: Initial, Left top, Left center, Left bottom, Right top, Right center, Right bottom, Center top, Center center, Center bottom, Custom

  • Custom mask position

  • Mask size

    Available options for mask size are:

    • Auto – The mask image is displayed in its original size.

    • Contain – Resize the mask image to make sure the image is fully visible.

    • Custom – Opens text field for custom mask size.

  • Custom mask size

Module general styles (Pro only)

  • Text color – Select with the color picker or enter a hex code.

  • Minimum height – Set a minimum height in px or rem.

Secondary menu

Configure how the activity appears in the secondary menu of your course.

  • Secondary menu title – Choose what to display:

    • Activity title

    • Activity type

    • Custom – Opens custom title options.

  • Custom title – Enter a custom name and optionally use it in the course index or on course/section pages.

Note: Configuring the secondary menu title only takes effect if the hero activity is enabled.

Additional settings with integrations

The following settings are only available for activities created with our Video Time Premium plugin:

  • Use activity image
    Choose whether the activity image displayed should be pulled from the Video Time activity.

  • Display progress
    Decide if the view percentage of the Video Time activity should be displayed as the activity’s progress.

The following settings are only available for activities created with the Subcourse plugin from Catalyst IT:

  • Use subcourse image as activity image
    The subcourse activity image is used as the activity image.

  • Use subcourse progress as activity progress
    ​The progress of the subcourse is used as the activity progress.
    The user must be enrolled in the subcourse for this to work.
