Virtual Backgrounds for VRI Calls

How to set a virtual background before or during a VRI call, and configure LSC-level background settings for interpreters.

Written by Quinn Bott

Virtual backgrounds let you set a background image or blur effect on VRI calls.

Note: Virtual backgrounds are disabled by default. If you're an LSC admin and want to enable this feature, contact your Account Manager.

Important Note: Virtual backgrounds are only supported on Chromium browsers such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. They are not supported on Firefox or the mobile apps.

Set a background before the call

  1. Select the settings wheel in the caller, then select Virtual Backgrounds.

  1. In the pop-up, choose a background for your VRI calls, then select Save.

Set a background during the call

Select the arrow next to the Camera icon to turn on or change your background mid-call.

LSC-level settings

As an LSC admin, you can upload custom backgrounds, delete them, and enforce a single background or the blur effect for all interpreters.

  1. Go to Configuration>Interpreters.

  2. Hover over the Virtual Background setting and select Edit.

  1. In the pop-up, choose how backgrounds work.

  • Allow interpreters to choose from available backgrounds: you can still set a default that applies when interpreters join a VRI meeting.

  • Enforce selected background for all interpreters in your roster: all interpreters use the same background and can't change it.

Note: You cannot restrict a requestor's ability to choose their own virtual background.

  1. To add background images, select Add Images. To delete an added image, hover over it and select the "X."

Note: You can't remove the default images, only images your LSC has added.

Audit Trail

Changes to virtual background settings appear in the Audit Trail.

Next steps / Getting more help

For LSC admins: if a background isn't applying or enforcing as expected, confirm the interpreter is on a supported Chromium browser, then contact Boostlingo Support with the interpreter's name and a screenshot of your Virtual Background settings. If you're not sure how to reach Support, contact your Account Manager.
