Series types

This article is a guide on the different series types options on the New Back Office.

Every series has a type — Full series, Open series, or Single class — chosen when the series is created. The type shows as a chip in the Type column on the Series list, and it controls how clients can join classes within the series.

The three series types

Type

What it does

Full series

All classes are booked at once. No one can join once the series has started.

Open series

Clients can join after the series has started; booking books all remaining classes.

Single class

Each class in the series is booked independently.

This is set as the Type in the Set up series step when a series is created — see Creating a series.

Migrating from the old setting

Previously, this was controlled by two dependent checkboxes — the second only made sense once the first was ticked, and neither explained what it actually did:

  • Book all the sessions in the group at once — on by default. When on, booking one session automatically enrols the client in every session in the group. Turning it off let clients pick which sessions to enrol in individually.

  • Allow enrolment on the way — only mattered if the first checkbox was on. Off by default, meaning clients couldn't join once the group had started; turning it on allowed enrolment into the remaining sessions.

The three new types make every combination of those checkboxes explicit:

Old checkboxes

New type

Book all at once on + Allow enrolment on the way off

Full series

Book all at once on + Allow enrolment on the way on

Open series

Book all at once off (second checkbox didn't apply)

Single class

Common questions

Which type fits a course that should start together and not accept late joiners (e.g. a 6-week programme)?
Full series — it books everyone at once and prevents late joins once it's started.

Which type fits a drop-in-style series where people can start anytime?
Open series — new bookings join and book all remaining classes.

Which type should I use if classes in the series need to be booked and cancelled individually?
Single class.

How does this compare to the old force-registration setting?
See "Migrating from the old setting" above for the exact mapping.
