Limit how often customers can change their birthday

You can now control how often a customer is allowed to change the birthday (or anniversary) they've saved with your store. This closes a loophole where customers were re-entering their birthday to repeatedly claim the birthday reward.

What's new

On the Birthday earn rule, you'll find a new setting for how often a customer can update their birthday date:

  • Never — the customer sets their birthday once, and it's locked in for good.

  • 1–30 days — the customer can update their birthday, but only after the cooldown period you set has passed.

This setting works the same way for anniversary dates.

What this means for your store

By default, the cooldown is set to 1 day, so nothing changes for your store unless you choose a stricter option. If you'd like to prevent birthday-reward abuse, we recommend setting this to Never or a longer cooldown window, depending on how strict you want to be.

Where customers see this

Once a cooldown is active, customers will see it consistently across every place they interact with their birthday or anniversary date:

  • The loyalty widget

  • The loyalty landing page

  • Their customer account

If a customer tries to change their date before the cooldown has passed, they'll see a message letting them know when they'll be able to update it next.

This experience is fully translated across all 23 supported languages.

How to set it up

  1. Go to Earn Rules in your loyalty dashboard.

  2. Open the Birthday (or Anniversary) earn rule.

  3. Under the date-change setting, choose Never or select a cooldown period between 1 and 30 days.

  4. Save your changes.
