How do I use Chexy to pay business taxes to the CRA?

What you need to know to pay payroll remittances, GST/HST and corporate income tax to the CRA with Chexy, with links to a step-by-step guide for each.

You can pay your business taxes to the CRA with your credit card through Chexy. This article covers what applies to every tax. For the step-by-step instructions on the CRA side, use the guide for your tax: payroll remittances, GST/HST or corporate income tax.

Before you start

  • You need a Chexy business account. Learn how to get started.

  • Chexy pays the CRA by Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD): you give the CRA your Chexy account details, and the CRA withdraws ("pulls") the payment on the date you choose. This isn't the same as bill pay, used by PaySimply and by Chexy for personal income tax, which sends ("pushes") the money to the CRA.

  • Business taxes can only be paid by Pre-Authorized Debit. Bill pay isn't available for them.

  • There are two parts: set up the payment in Chexy, then schedule the withdrawal in your CRA account. The payment won't go through until both are done.

  • The CRA won't accept a payment date sooner than 5 business days away, so set it up at least a week ahead. If your payment is due sooner than that, pay it outside Chexy this time and set up Chexy for the next one.

  • Set up one Chexy payment for each tax (payroll, GST/HST, corporate tax). Your Chexy account details are the same for all of them, but separate payments make sure there are enough funds in your Chexy account for each withdrawal.

  • From Quebec or Alberta?

    • If you're paying corporate taxes to Revenu Québec with a 20-digit payment code, follow these instructions.

    • We don't support corporate tax payments to the Government of Alberta.

What you'll need

  • A list of the taxes you want to pay

  • The amount for each, from your accountant or your CRA account

  • How often you'll pay each one (for example one-time or monthly) and the payment date

Part 1: Set up the payment in Chexy

  1. From your dashboard, tap New Payment and search for CRA.

  2. Select CRA - Canada Revenue Agency, then Business taxes & remittance.

  3. Enter the amount and a nickname so you can tell your payments apart, for example ABC Co. Payroll Remittance Q1 2026.

  4. Under Repeats, choose how often: One-time, Weekly, Biweekly, Twice a month, Monthly, Quarterly or Custom. Pick one you can match on the CRA side (see the table in Part 2).

  5. Review the details and tap Continue. If it's your first payment with Chexy, you'll verify your identity and business details, link your Aeroplan account (optional), and add your credit card.

  6. Do a final review, then tap Activate, or Pay now for a one-time payment.

  7. Back on your dashboard, open the payment and tap PAD details. Copy the institution, transit and account numbers, or download the void cheque with your Chexy account details. You'll need them in Part 2.

Note the Funds available date on the payment. For a one-time payment, your card is charged right away and the funds are available 3 business days later. The withdrawal date you choose on the CRA side must be on or after the Funds available date.

Part 2: Schedule the withdrawal in your CRA account

The steps on the CRA side are different for each tax. Follow the guide for the tax you're paying:

In every case you'll sign in to CRA My Business Account as your business, open the tax's account from the left menu, choose Schedule one or more payments from your Canadian chequing account, and enter your Chexy PAD details.

The CRA offers fewer schedules than Chexy, so match them like this:

In Chexy

On the CRA side

Weekly

Biweekly

Monthly

Twice a month, Quarterly or Custom

Not offered by the CRA. Schedule a one-time CRA payment for each date, in advance, and add the next one each time.

For a repeating schedule, the CRA asks how many payments to make, and the withdrawals stop after the last one. Choose enough to cover the period you'll pay through Chexy. The CRA shows the Last payment date on its summary screen before you submit.

Already have a PAD with the CRA? Switch it to Chexy

If you already pay a tax to the CRA by Pre-Authorized Debit from your bank, you can edit the existing agreement instead of creating a new one:

  1. Sign in to CRA My Business Account. On the Overview page, under Business balance and services, select Manage pre-authorized debit.

  2. Select your agreement from the list, then Edit. You can only edit it if the next payment is at least 5 business days away.

  3. Make sure the Next payment date is on or after the Funds available date in Chexy, so there are enough funds to withdraw.

  4. Near the bottom, select Enter new banking information and enter your Chexy PAD details from Part 1.

  5. Review and Submit. Repeat for each tax you pay this way.

If you've paid a tax by bill pay before, there's no agreement to edit. Create a new one using the guide for that tax.

Check it's set up

On the CRA Overview page, under Business balance and services, select Manage pre-authorized debit. Don't choose Direct deposit transactions: that's for payments the CRA makes to you, not payments you make to the CRA.

Under Active agreement(s) you'll see each debit with its amount, how often it repeats, the Next payment date and the number of Payments remaining. Look for one with the right amount and date.

  • It's listed: you're all set. Don't create another one, or the CRA may withdraw twice. Check Payments remaining so you know when it will end.

  • It's not listed: follow the guide for your tax to set it up.

  • It stopped withdrawing: a repeating debit ends after the number of payments you chose. Select View inactive agreement(s) to see ended agreements (the CRA keeps them there for at least a year). Set up a new one, and message us so we can pause your card charges until the CRA starts withdrawing again.

Use this screen to check and edit your debits. To schedule a new one, use the steps in the guide for your tax: the CRA itself points you to View and pay account balance on each tax account.

When your card is charged

  • Repeating payments (weekly, biweekly, twice a month, monthly, quarterly or custom): your card is charged 3 business days before each payment date, so the funds are ready when the CRA withdraws.

  • One-time payments: your card is charged when you complete setup, unless you're paying with Amex (below).

  • The CRA usually shows the payment as received within 1–2 business days of the withdrawal, occasionally up to 8.

Why does my payment show as "Pending"?

If you're paying the CRA with an Amex, the first payment works a little differently. Instead of charging your card right away, we wait for the CRA's first withdrawal. Once it comes in and clears, we charge your card. Until then, the payment shows as Pending, usually for a few business days.

This applies to the first payment to the CRA, and to every one-time payment, since a one-time payment always counts as new. After that, your card is charged on the usual schedule. There's nothing you need to do while it's pending; it's working as expected.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the CRA's debit card or Apple Pay option instead of paying from your Canadian chequing account. Only the chequing account option works with Chexy.

  • Entering your Chexy details under Direct deposit. Direct deposit is for money the CRA pays you. Use the payment steps in your tax's guide instead.

  • Entering your employees' net pay instead of the amount you owe the CRA.

  • Choosing too few payments on a repeating schedule, so the CRA stops withdrawing while Chexy keeps your payment active.

  • Paying business taxes from a personal Chexy account or through the personal (SIN) tax flow. Business taxes need a business account and Pre-Authorized Debit.

  • Changing the date or amount in only one place. Update it in both Chexy and your CRA account.

  • Setting it up too late. The CRA won't accept a date sooner than 5 business days away, so start at least a week before the due date.
