How do I pay payroll remittances (source deductions) to the CRA with Chexy?

Step-by-step instructions for paying payroll source deductions (RP account) to the CRA by Pre-Authorized Debit with Chexy.

Payroll remittances, also called source deductions, are the income tax, CPP and EI you hold back from your employees' pay, plus your employer share of CPP and EI. You can pay them with your credit card through Chexy.

Chexy pays the CRA by Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD). You set up the payment in Chexy, then schedule the CRA to withdraw it from your Chexy account. The payment only goes through when both steps are done.

Before you start

  • You need a Chexy business account. Learn how to get started.

  • Business taxes can only be paid by Pre-Authorized Debit. Bill pay isn't available for them.

  • Your CRA payroll account number is your 9-digit business number followed by RP0001 (for most businesses).

  • Have ready: your remittance amount (from your accountant or your CRA account), how often you remit, and your payment date.

  • Due date: it depends on your remitter type, which the CRA assigns. Most small businesses are regular remitters: payroll paid in a month is due by the 15th of the next month. For example, pay on October 1 or October 31 is due by November 15. Quarterly remitters pay by the 15th after each quarter. Accelerated remitters pay sooner: pay from the 1st to the 15th is due by the 25th of that month, and pay from the 16th to month-end is due by the 10th of the next month. Not sure which you are? Check your CRA account or ask your accountant.

  • Schedule the CRA payment on or before your due date. For regular remitters that's the 15th; a payment dated after it is late. We suggest a date between the 1st and the 11th to leave room for weekends and holidays. Accelerated remitters should work back from their earlier deadline the same way.

  • The CRA won't accept a payment date sooner than 5 business days away, so set it up at least a week ahead. If your remittance is due sooner than that, pay it outside Chexy this time and set up Chexy for the next one.

Step 1: Set up the payment in Chexy

  1. From your dashboard, tap New Payment and search for CRA.

  2. Select CRA - Canada Revenue Agency, then Business taxes & remittance.

  3. Enter the remittance amount and a nickname so you can tell your payments apart, for example ABC Co. Payroll Remittance Q1 2026.

  4. Under Repeats, choose how often. Pick a schedule you can match on the CRA side (see step 6 in Step 2).

  5. Review the details and tap Continue. If it's your first payment with Chexy, you'll verify your identity and business details, link your Aeroplan account (optional), and add your credit card.

  6. Do a final review, then tap Activate, or Pay now for a one-time payment.

  7. Back on your dashboard, open the payment and tap PAD details. Copy the institution, transit and account numbers, or download the void cheque with your Chexy account details. You'll need them in Step 2.

Note the Funds available date on the payment. For a one-time payment, your card is charged right away and the funds are available 3 business days later. The CRA payment date in Step 2 must be on or after the Funds available date.

Step 2: Schedule the withdrawal in your CRA account

  1. Sign in to CRA My Business Account as your business, not your personal account. You'll start on the Overview page.

  2. In the left menu, choose Payroll, then your payroll account (RP0001).

  3. Tap Pay source deduction remittances.

  4. Enter the period end date, your gross payroll (total pay before deductions), the number of employees (1 if you only pay yourself), and the amount to pay the CRA. This is your remittance, not your employees' net pay. Tap Next.

  5. Tap Start, then choose Schedule one or more payments from your Canadian chequing account. Skip the Visa Debit, Debit Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay option; it doesn't go through Chexy.

  6. Under How often?, choose One time, Weekly, Bi-Weekly, Monthly or End of month, then the payment date and, for a repeating schedule, how many payments. Match what you chose in Chexy. If you chose Twice a month, Quarterly or Custom in Chexy, schedule a one-time CRA payment for each date instead. The CRA won't accept a date sooner than 5 business days away.

  7. Under banking information, choose Enter new banking information and enter your Chexy branch (20002), institution (621) and account number. If you've paid through Chexy before, choose Use existing banking information and check it shows People's Trust Company.

  8. Review the summary, tick the Authorization box, and tap Submit. Save or print the confirmation page.

Timing: the CRA withdraws about 5 business days after the date you choose. With weekends and holidays, that can leave only a day or two before your remittance is due, so don't leave it late.

You can also schedule payroll from Manage pre-authorized debit > Schedule payments on the Overview page. Pick your payroll program account and payment allocation; it asks for the same details.

Already have a payroll PAD with the CRA? Switch it to Chexy

If you already pay payroll remittances by Pre-Authorized Debit from your bank, edit the existing agreement instead of creating a new one:

  1. Sign in to CRA My Business Account. On the Overview page, under Business balance and services, select Manage pre-authorized debit.

  2. Select your payroll agreement from the list, then Edit. You can only edit it if the next payment is at least 5 business days away.

  3. Make sure the Next payment date is on or after the Funds available date in Chexy, so there are enough funds to withdraw.

  4. Near the bottom, select Enter new banking information and enter your Chexy PAD details.

  5. Review and Submit.

If you've paid payroll by bill pay before, there's no agreement to edit. Create a new one using Step 2 above.

Changing a payment later

To change the date or amount, update it in both Chexy and your CRA account. Changing only one side means the CRA withdraws a different amount, or on a different date, than Chexy has ready.

Check it's set up

On the CRA Overview page, under Business balance and services, select Manage pre-authorized debit (not Direct deposit transactions, which is for payments the CRA makes to you). If your debit is listed with the right amount and date, you're all set; don't create another one, or the CRA may withdraw twice. The Payments remaining column shows when it will end. If the CRA stopped withdrawing, check View inactive agreement(s): the debit has probably reached its last payment, so set up a new one and message us so we can pause your card charges.

When is my card charged?

  • Repeating payments: 3 business days before each payment date.

  • One-time payments: when you complete setup.

  • Paying with Amex: your first payment to the CRA, and every one-time payment, shows as Pending until the CRA withdraws. We charge your card once the withdrawal clears. There's nothing you need to do.

Common payroll mistakes

  • Entering your employees' net pay instead of the remittance amount.

  • Choosing the CRA's debit card or Apple Pay option instead of your chequing account.

  • Entering your Chexy details under Direct deposit.

  • Choosing too few payments on a repeating schedule, so the CRA stops withdrawing while your Chexy payment stays active.
