If you're a NSW public school or approved early childhood centre and need to report a concern about a teacher or other staff member on ClassCover, there are clear steps to follow to ensure the issue is handled appropriately.
This process applies to any teacher or casual staff member (e.g. SLSOs, education assistants) you’ve encountered via ClassCover who may pose a professional, behavioural, or safety concern.
Whether you need to temporarily suspend a casual, share feedback with your team, or escalate serious concerns to the NSW Department of Education, this guide will walk you through the process step by step.
Step 1: Follow Internal School Protocols
Before taking any action on ClassCover, you should follow your school’s internal process for raising concerns. This may include:
Notifying the principal or your supervisor
Logging an internal incident report
Seeking guidance from your local staffing or HR team
Escalating to the Department of Education when required
For serious matters or if you’re unsure, you can contact EDConnect on 1300 32 32 32 for further direction.
Step 2: Manage the Casual on ClassCover
Once you've followed the correct internal protocols, you may choose to restrict the casual from being booked again at your school by:
Suspending the casual
This will temporarily remove them from your school list. The teacher will not be notified but will no longer appear in your booking options.Applying black stars
This marks the casual with a one-star rating. Teachers with black stars are deprioritised in your list and won’t be auto-booked or shortlisted.
You can manage both of these options by going to your list and clicking the options next to the casual’s profile.
Step 3: Share Internal Feedback with Your Team
If you'd like to make your team aware of the concern without removing the casual entirely, you can send a message to a colleague's email address using the “Share” button next to their name in your school list. This allows you to:
Write a personalised message (e.g. context around performance or behaviour)
Notify other ClassCover administrators at your school
Maintain a private log of feedback not visible to the teacher
This can be helpful when managing minor issues or noting teacher suitability for future bookings.
Step 4: Contact the Department if You Have Major Concerns
If you have serious concerns about a casual’s conduct, beyond performance or behaviour issues, please escalate the issue directly to the Employee Performance and Conduct Directorate (EPAC).
Phone: 02 9266 8070
Further Information: Visit the EPAC website for more details on how to proceed with formal complaints and concerns.
