What Is AI Detection?

AI Detection is a tool built into CoGrader that helps flag writing that may resemble AI-generated text. It’s available in the AI Detection tab within the feedback interface and is included in all paid plans and free trials (not available on the Starter plan).

How Does It Work?

CoGrader’s AI Detection utilizes a method called perplexity analysis, which measures the predictability of the writing. AI-generated text tends to be overly consistent and lacks the natural variation of human writing.

The tool provides a Full Text AI Similarity Score (0–100%) at the top of the tab. A higher score indicates that the writing follows patterns commonly found in AI-generated content.

Below that, you’ll see highlighted portions of the essay that may be AI-like. The more highlighted content you see, the stronger the signal that the writing shares structure or phrasing typical of AI tools.

Where Can I Find the AI Detection?

The AI Detection tool is located within the AI Detection tab of the CoGrader feedback interface. There are four tabs:

  1. Comments (inline teacher feedback)

  2. Grammar (spelling and structure fixes)

  3. Plagiarism (similarity with known sources)

  4. AI Detection (this tool!)

You’ll see:

  • A full-text AI similarity score at the top

  • Highlighting in the student response shows which sections most resemble AI-generated text

What If I Don’t See Anything Highlighted?

If no parts of the essay are highlighted, it means CoGrader didn’t detect strong enough AI-like patterns in any single portion of the text.

However, if the full text score is still high, it’s worth reviewing the document. Sometimes the structure or phrasing feels AI-generated as a whole, even if no specific lines stand out clearly enough to highlight.

Is It Always Accurate?

No AI detection tool is flawless, including ours.

  • AI use is hard to detect, especially when students paraphrase, reword, or post-edit the text.

  • A high score isn’t proof. A low score isn’t immunity.

That’s why CoGrader does not recommend using this tool alone to make academic decisions.

Tips for Using AI Detection Wisely

Use the tool as a signal, not a verdict. CoGrader’s scores are helpful, but not 100% definitive.

Best practices:

  • Review the assignment context and writing history

  • Engage the student in a brief conversation if you are unsure. Use it to start a conversation, not end one.

  • Only flag it formally when there’s a clear, consistent pattern and a very high score.

What Plans Include AI Detection?

  • Free Trial

  • Standard & School Plans

  • Starter Plan – AI Detection is not included

If you’re on a Starter plan and want access, you might want to consider upgrading. 😉
