What Is AI Detection?

AI Detection is a system that scores how closely a student’s writing matches known patterns from AI-generated text. It’s part of the Feedback tab interface and is available for all paid plans and free trials (not available on the Starter plan).

It offers:

  • Selected Sentence Score: A real-time score for the highlighted sentence.

  • Full Text Score: A score that reflects how AI-like the entire document is.

How Does It Work?

CoGrader’s AI detection relies on perplexity—a measure of how predictable a piece of writing is. AI-generated text is often very predictable and lacks the messiness of human writing. Here's how detection is calculated:

  • AI Similarity Score (0–100%): A high score suggests more similarity to unedited AI-generated text.

  • Perplexity-based analysis: If text follows ultra-consistent patterns, it's more likely to be flagged.

Where Can I Find the AI Detection?

The AI Detection tool is inside the AI Detection tab under the new CoGrader feedback interface. There are now four tabs:

  1. Comments (inline teacher feedback)

  2. Plagiarism (similarity with known sources)

  3. AI Detection (this tool!)

  4. Grammar (spelling and structure fixes)

You’ll see:

  • Highlighting in the essay (if detected)

  • A sentence-by-sentence score

  • A full-text score for overall AI resemblance

If you don’t see any highlights, CoGrader did not confidently detect AI content in that document.

What If I Don’t See Anything Highlighted?

That usually means:

  • CoGrader didn’t detect AI-like patterns confidently enough to highlight.

  • It’s also possible that reworded content or sophisticated writing escapes detection.

If the full text score is still high, review the document carefully. It may still resemble AI in structure, even if individual sentences weren’t flagged.

Is It Always Accurate?

No AI detection tool is flawless, including ours.

  • AI use is hard to detect, especially when students paraphrase, reword, or post-edit the text.

  • A high score isn’t proof. A low score isn’t immunity.

That’s why CoGrader does not recommend using this tool alone to make academic decisions.

Tips for Using AI Detection Wisely

Use the tool as a signal, not a verdict. CoGrader’s scores are helpful, but not 100% definitive.

Best practices:

  • Review the assignment context and writing history

  • Engage the student in a quick conversation if unsure

  • Consider flagging and documenting only when there’s a consistent pattern or unusually high scores

What Plans Include AI Detection?

  • Free Trial

  • Standard & School Plans

  • Starter Plan – AI Detection is not included

If you’re on a Starter plan and want access, you might want to consider upgrading. 😉
