If you're using CoGrader with Google Classroom and want students to revise and resubmit their work to improve their grade, you have two reliable options. Each has its strengths, and the best choice depends on whether you need to keep the original writing visible.

Option 1: Replace the Original Work with the Revised Version (Recommended)

This is the most reliable option for clean regrading.

Steps:

  1. Students open the original Google Doc and delete the old writing.

  2. They paste in their revised version.

  3. They resubmit the assignment in Google Classroom.

Why this works best:

  • CoGrader reads only the new content.

  • There’s no confusion about which part to grade.

  • It keeps the file clean and simple for both teacher and student.

Option 2: Keep the Original Work + Add the Revision Above It

If you'd like to compare the student’s original and revised work side-by-side, this method can work — with clear formatting.

Steps:

  1. Students open their Google Doc and add a new section at the top labeled:

    === Revised Version ===
  2. They paste their revised writing under that label.

  3. Below the revision, they insert another label:

    === Original Version ===

    (No need to change the original text, keep it as-is.)

  4. Resubmit the file as usual.

Important: For this option, after loading the work and grading is complete, you must go in and review, then provide CoGrader with clear instructions on what to grade. Use the chat Instructions in the platform to say:

Only evaluate the section directly below “Revised Version” and stop reading once you reach any previous feedback or the original draft. Ignore everything below the revised writing.

Why you might choose this:

  • Helpful in comparing growth between drafts.

  • Keeps all writing in one place for conferencing.

Limitations:

  • If the formatting is unclear, CoGrader may misread the sections.

  • Slightly more setup required.

Which Should I Use?

If you’re looking for clean, accurate regrading without complications, Option 1 (replace the original) is your best bet.

If you need visibility into writing growth and can clearly label the document, Option 2 works. Just be sure to test it with a couple of students first.
