In Encompass, you have the ability to ask up to two follow-up questions to any question you set up within a Program. In the platform, we refer to the relationship between the original question and its follow-up questions as Parent, Child, and Grandchild questions.

The Parent question is the top level of the question. The Child question can provide you with more detail on the Parent question, and the Grandchild question can provide you with additional detail on the Child question. Here’s an example of how these three levels of questions can work together:

Important things to remember about Parent, Child, & Grandchild questions:

  • They are linked together. Once set up, Child and Grandchild questions are linked to their Parent question.

  • You can have multiple Child questions tied to a Parent, or multiple Grandchild questions tied to a Child.

  • Child and Grandchild questions can only be seen in a Program if their Parent has been answered according to the rules you set up in your questions.

    • In the example above, the Child question will only show if the answer to the Parent question is “No”

  • Child questions are a great way to focus your Programs so that only the most appropriate questions show to the person completing the Program.

    • For example, if you had a list of questions that were only appropriate for stores in one region, you could set up a Parent question: Is this store located in the Texas region? (Yes/No), then your list of questions for the Texas region would only appear if “Yes” was selected.
