How can I overwrite Timings?

Learn how to overwrite timings such as the Estimated Duration, Back times, and more

Updated over 10 months ago

There are various ways of using and calculating Timings in your Episode. Timings can either be entered manually, calculated automatically, or both by overwriting a calculated value.

Automatically calculated Timings

Before going into detail on how you can manually enter Timings, as well as how to overwrite Timings in Cuez, it is important to know how Cuez can calculate certain Timings for you automatically.

Estimated Duration

Blocks

Text Blocks can be configured to have their text be included in the Timings, meaning Cuez can automatically show how long it would take to read the text of that Text Block, and show that value as the Block's Estimated Duration.

Cue Blocks can be configured to have a Media field that can be included in the Timings, meaning Cuez can automatically show how long the attached media (audio, video) would be and show that value as the Block's Estimated Duration.

Items

The Estimated Duration of an Item is calculated automatically as the total of the Estimated Durations of all underlying Text and Cue Blocks that make up the Item.

Parts

The Estimated Duration of a Part is calculated automatically as the total of the Estimated Durations of all underlying Items that make up the Part.

Front time

The Front Time shows the estimated start time of each Part, Item or Block, and is based on the Episode's On Air Time plus the Estimated Duration of the previous Part, Item or Block.

E.g.: If the Episode's On Air time is 12:00:00, then the Front time of the first Part, Item and Block are all 12:00:00. If the first Item, for example, has an Estimated Duration of 1 minute, then the Front time of the next Item would be 12:01:00.

End time

The End Time shows the estimated end time of each Part, Item or Block, and is based on the Front Time plus the Estimated Duration of the Part, Item or Block.

E.g.: If an Item's Front time is 12:00:00 and it has an Estimated Duration of 1 minute, then the End time of this Item would be 12:01:00.

Back time

The Back time shows the time we should start a Part, Item or Block if we want to end our show on time, based on the (Episode) Off Air Time.

E.g.: If the Episode's Off Air time is 13:00:00, and the last Item has an Estimated Duration of 5 minutes, then the Back time of this Item would be 12:55:00.

Manual Timings and overwriting

Estimated Duration

As mentioned above, Cuez can automatically calculate the Estimated Duration of Parts, Items and Blocks, but you can always overwrite these values with your own custom values. Simply select the calculated time and overwrite it with your new value.
If you don't have Blocks (or Block fields rather) configured to be included in the automatic calculations, you can always manually enter an Estimated Duration by clicking in the empty Est. Duration cell for that Block and entering your own value.

Blocks

When the Estimated Duration of a Block is overwritten or entered manually, the Estimated Duration for the 'parent' Item and Part will update accordingly.

Items

When the Estimated Duration of an Item is overwritten, the Estimated Duration for the 'parent' Part will update accordingly. This does not affect the underlying Block durations, but will grey out the Block's Estimated Durations as these will no longer have any effect on the Item or Part Timing.

Parts

The Estimated Duration for Parts can also be overwritten. This does not affect the underlying Item or Block durations, but will grey out all the Item and Block Estimated Durations as these will no longer have any effect on the Part timing.
