Learn about the different Story priorities and how to use them to manage your stories

Updated over a week ago

Depending on the layout you select, the Storiez News Desk provides different 'Priorities' to add your stories under:

  • Breaking

  • Actual

  • Events

  • Pitch

  • Archived

  • Dropped

These priorities translate to collapsable segments in the News Desk layout, allowing you to create stories directly under a certain priority, as well as to drag&drop stories from one priority to another, and between different days.

When a story is opened, the details of the story also allow you to change the priority as needed.

How to use the story priorities

When creating a new story, a default priority can be assigned to it. This can be configured in the default Story Properties via the settings.

In most cases, however, a new story will be created in the News Desk or Story Tray, and this immediately under the desired priority. To do so, simply use the '+' buttons shown for each of the priorities in your News Desk.

A story can evolve and move between priorities

Stories can start as a certain priority and move to another one as the story develops and/or as the result of an editorial decision;

  • A story can start as a 'pitch' or 'event', but would evolve into an 'actual' or 'breaking' as time goes on and more information about the story is added

  • When the story is done/over, it can be 'archived', or should the story be stopped prematurely, it can be 'dropped'

What do the different priorities mean

You and your team can decide what each of the priorities mean for you, but we do have our own suggestions of how to use them.

Breaking

The 'Breaking' priority is ideal to add stories for events that have just happened, or are currently occurring or developing.

Actual

The ‘Actual’ priority is for those stories that are ongoing, the stories happening ‘at the moment’. These can be stories that have just happened or are currently developing, or they can be stories linked to events happening on multiple days or weeks, such as e.g. the Olympics, US elections,.. A pitch or event can be promoted to become an actual story.

Events

The 'Events' priority can be used in a similar way as the 'Pitch' priority, but stories under 'Events' usually have at least one or more 'Activities' added to them in the story properties. These activities are most often events that would otherwise be added to your calendar, meaning these stories would be about scheduled events.

Pitch

'Pitches' are potential stories, stories that are not yet confirmed that they will be handled or scheduled. Once it is decided that a pitched story will go through, ideally it would be moved to one of the other priorities.

Archived

The 'Archived' priority is an ideal place to move stories to that are no longer needed, but that you do not want to delete or drop.

Dropped

The 'Dropped' priority can be used for stories that you and your team have decided not to go through with. Instead of deleting the story, and all the work that may already have been put in it, it can simply be 'dropped', which keeps the story in existence so it could be picked up at a later point if needed.
