Billing Threshold - Duplicate Charges

Updated over a week ago

You’re seeing another bill because your Shopify billing threshold was reached.
Shopify automatically issues a new bill when your app usage fees and transaction activity exceed your account’s threshold amount — even if your monthly subscription hasn’t renewed yet.

What Is a Billing Threshold?

Your billing threshold is the amount of accumulated charges Shopify allows before issuing a new bill.
Once your usage-based fees (like app charges or transaction fees) exceed this amount, Shopify automatically generates a new bill - even if you were just billed recently.

This ensures that your account doesn’t accumulate a large balance between monthly billing dates.

Example (Basic Shopify Plan)

Let’s use a real-world example:

You’re on the Basic Shopify plan, which has a billing threshold of $200.
That means:

  • You’ll receive a new bill every time your usage charges exceed $200.

  • Shopify allows a little buffer - up to 110% of your threshold - before temporarily pausing additional billable activity.

Breakdown:

  • Your plan’s threshold: $200

  • Shopify’s buffer: up to 110% = $220

  • Once your app usage (for example, Evey ticket fees or third-party charges) hits $200–$220, Shopify issues a new bill automatically.

So even if you just paid your previous bill last week, a new charge can appear if your store activity (sales, events, or app usage) quickly exceeds that $200 threshold.

What’s Included in the Threshold?

Threshold bills include:

  • Usage-based app fees (like Evey’s per-ticket fees)

  • Transaction fees from third-party apps

  • Other variable charges incurred during the billing cycle

Threshold bills do not include:

  • Your monthly Shopify subscription

  • App subscription base fees

These subscription costs are billed separately on your regular billing date.

Example Scenario (Evey Usage Fees)

Let’s say your Evey ticket sales yesterday were $938, and Evey charges a per-ticket usage fee.
At that volume, your usage charges likely exceeded Shopify’s $200 threshold several times - meaning you’d receive multiple threshold-based bills throughout the day as each $200 increment was hit.

What Happens After You Reach the Threshold

When your account hits its billing threshold:

  1. Shopify automatically generates a new bill.

  2. You can continue making sales or using apps (like Evey) up to 110% of your threshold.

  3. Once you hit 110%, further billable actions (like ticket creation or shipping labels) are paused until the bill is paid.

Key Takeaways

  • Repeated charges in a short time period are normal when your usage-based fees exceed your threshold.

  • Shopify issues bills automatically to prevent large accumulated charges.

  • Subscription fees and usage fees are billed separately.

  • Each plan has a different threshold level - the higher your plan, the higher your threshold.

In summary:
If you were just charged and see another bill, it’s not a duplicate - it’s a threshold-based bill triggered by your app usage (like ticket fees or other third-party charges) reaching Shopify’s billing limit for your plan.
