Desktop app does not start recording

Updated over 2 weeks ago

If you're clicking Start Recording but nothing happens, or the recording starts but the audio wave form is a flat line (not responding to your voice), it usually means the wrong microphone is selected.

This can happen if the default input is a virtual device or simply not the mic you want to use.

Here’s how to select the correct microphone inside the app:

On macOS

  1. Look at the menu bar at the very top of your screen (where the Apple menu is).

  2. Find and click on the Input Device menu item for our application.

  3. You will see a list of all available microphones. This might include:

    • Your computer's built-in microphone (e.g., "MacBook Pro Microphone")

    • An external headset or microphone you've plugged in.

  4. Select the microphone you want to use from the list.

  5. Try clicking Start Recording again. You should now see the waveform respond to your voice.

On Windows

  1. Inside the application, press the Alt key on your keyboard.

  2. This will make the application's menu bar appear at the top of the app window.

  3. On the left side of that menu bar, click on Input Device.

  4. You will see a list of all available microphones. This might include:

    • Your computer's built-in microphone (e.g., "Internal Microphone Array")

    • An external headset or microphone you've plugged in.

  5. Select the microphone you want to use from the list.

  6. Try clicking Start Recording again. The waveform should now respond to your voice.

Still Not Working?

If you've tried selecting the correct device and it's still not recording audio:

  • Try another device: If you selected your headset, try selecting your computer's built-in microphone (or vice-versa) to see if the problem is with the hardware itself.

  • Check System Permissions: Make sure our app has permission to access your microphone.

    • macOS: Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and ensure our app is toggled on.

    • Windows: Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and ensure "Let apps access your microphone" and our app are toggled on.

  • Restart the App: Close the application completely and reopen it. This can often reset the connection to your audio devices.
