How to Build a Master ICP Document for Spear

Written by Camila

The ICP filters you set on a campaign (job titles, industries, company size, location) define who gets targeted.

A master ICP document is a separate, written reference that captures why those people matter — their pain points, buying triggers, and messaging angles. Keeping one and uploading it to the Documents Library means every campaign and every chat with the agent starts from the same source of truth, instead of you re-explaining your ideal customer each time.

Master ICP document vs. campaign ICP filters

  • Campaign ICP filters — the targeting settings inside a campaign (job titles, industries, company size, location). See How to define your ICP for a campaign and What are the ICP Filters in Spear?.

  • Master ICP document — a written doc describing your ideal customer in depth: who they are, what they struggle with, and how your product/service addresses it. It's not a Spear setting — it's a file you create and upload as context.

What to include

A useful master ICP document usually covers:

  • Firmographics — industry, company size, revenue range, geography

  • Buyer personas — job titles/seniority you target and what each persona cares about

  • Pain points — the specific problems your product solves for this audience

  • Buying triggers — events or signals that indicate someone is a good time to reach out (e.g. new job, funding round, hiring for a specific role)

  • Messaging angles — the value propositions or proof points that resonate with this audience

  • Disqualifiers — who looks like a fit but isn't (useful input for qualification rules)

How to upload and use it

  1. Click your agent in the left menu and open the Documents Library.

  2. Upload your master ICP document.

  3. Drop it into a chat and ask the agent to use it — for example: "Build a campaign for [segment] using my ICP doc" or "Write qualification rules based on my ICP doc."

See How do I use the Documents Library in AI Chat? for the full upload walkthrough — persona/ICP profiles are explicitly one of the supported document types.

Why it's worth doing

Without a master ICP document, every campaign and every chat request starts from scratch, and messaging tends to drift between profiles and campaigns. With one uploaded, the agent can build campaigns, write qualification rules, and draft messaging that consistently reflects the same target customer — across every profile in your organization.
