You can exclude certain contacts from your campaigns based on their tags or attributes, whether they come from WAX or from your own tools.
There are two main approaches:
Handle the exclusion upstream, at segment or list level: in this case, no filter is needed when contacts enter the flow. This is the recommended approach with Klaviyo (segment or list)
Add a condition directly in the flow: useful when you don't want to change the source segment and prefer to filter at run time.
Method 1: Exclusion through Klaviyo
Make sure you sync the tags and attributes you need before creating your filtering conditions on this page in Settings -> Integrations > Klaviyo.
Add an exclusion condition directly to an existing segment. Follow these steps:
Open Klaviyo and go to Lists & Segments.
Select the segment linked to your WhatsApp campaign.
In the editor, click + Add a condition.
Choose the filter type: profile property (attribute) or tag.
Set the exclusion rule: e.g. tag is not equal to "VIP"
Save. Only contacts who don't match the condition will be included in the campaign.
💡 You'll find your lists and segments in the Audiences → Lists & Segments tab.
Method 2: Exclude contacts with a WAX segment
In WAX, a segment groups your contacts by opt-in status and by tags or attributes. By default, contacts with an opted-out status are excluded, so you don't need to remove them yourself.
To exclude other contacts from your campaign:
Log in to your WAX account.
Go to Audiences → Lists & Segments to find your segments.
Find the segment used for your WhatsApp campaign, click the three dots on the right of the row, then select Edit.
Add a condition based on a contact tag or attribute (e.g. tag does not contain "vip_customer").
Save. The segment will automatically exclude contacts matching the condition.
Method 3: Add a condition at the start of the flow
An alternative to segment-based approaches, useful when you don't want to change the source segment. The filter applies when the contact enters the journey.
From the Campaigns tab, open your WhatsApp flow in the editor or create a new one by clicking Create.
In the flow builder, add a Condition block and connect it right after the Begin Campaign block, at the start of the flow.
Click the Select Conditions block to set your rule.
Set the exclusion condition: e.g. tag is "blacklist" → the contact doesn't move forward in the flow.
Save your changes and keep editing your campaign.
