How to add an Opt-in block to a flow?

Record your contacts' consent when entering a flow or at a specific step.

The Opt-in/Out block is the only way to change a contact's opt-in status within a flow. It logs a dated, sourced consent event, essential for staying compliant with regulatory requirements, and for ensuring the change is correctly reflected in your analytics.

Where should you place the Opt-in block in your flow?

The block can be positioned in two different places within a flow. The right choice comes down to a single question: has the contact already given consent before entering the flow, or does consent need to be collected during the journey?

1️⃣ At the start of the flow: when consent has already been obtained upstream

Place the Opt-in block right after the Start node when the contact has already given consent before even entering the flow. This is the typical case of a redirect: the contact filled out a form, ticked a box, or clicked an explicit link elsewhere (email, website, ad) before arriving on WhatsApp. Consent has therefore already been collected at that stage, the Opt-in/Out block simply records this event in WAX.

Example: Mail to WhatsApp / Welcome Flow A contact clicks a link in an email or a welcome pop-up to start a WhatsApp conversation. Since they already consented to being contacted before that click, the Opt-in/Out block is placed right at the entry of the flow, before any message is sent.

2️⃣ At a specific step in the flow: when consent (or opt-out) is collected during the journey

Place the Opt-in block further along in the flow, right after an explicit action from the contact that constitutes consent, for example clicking a "Sign me up", "Join the club", or "I want to receive offers" button. In this case, the contact has not yet consented at the entry of the flow: it's this specific action, partway through the journey, that triggers the opt-in.

Example: utility flow (order tracking, NPS, etc.) Within an order-tracking flow or an NPS survey, for instance, you also offer the contact the option to join your marketing communications via a dedicated button. The Opt-in block is then placed right after the click, to record consent at the exact moment it's given.

Expected result

Once a contact passes through the block, their opt-in status is updated (attribute whatsapp_opt_in_status for WhatsApp, sms_optin_status for RCS and SMS), with the update date and event source visible on their contact record.
