Cleaning and Staging the Kitchen

Who this is for: Hosts and Cleaning Companies cleaning and staging a Landing home.

This covers the kitchen and the dining area. For where each houseware goes in the cabinets, drawers, and counters, see Staging the Kitchen. For the full step-by-step on cleaning each appliance, see Cleaning Kitchen Appliances.

For the standard your work needs to meet, see Landing Cleaning Standards.

How do I clean the kitchen?

Clear the counters first, then work from the top down so crumbs and dust end up on the floors you clean last.

  1. Clear everything off the counters so you can clean the full surface.

  2. Clean the cabinets and drawers, inside and out. Remove any debris or food, wipe the insides and the fronts, and make sure the hardware and the drawer fronts are spotless and smudge free.

  3. Clean all the appliances, inside and out. This includes the refrigerator and freezer, oven, stovetop, microwave, dishwasher, Keurig, and toaster. They should be streak free. Turn the ice maker off and empty the ice. For the full step-by-step on each appliance, see Cleaning Kitchen Appliances.

  4. Scrub the backsplash and countertops. Use an all-purpose cleaner and pay attention to corners, edges, and where the counter meets the appliances.

  5. Clean and polish the sink and faucet. Dry them once clean so they do not spot.

  6. Run or empty the dishwasher. Load any dirty dishes and start the cycle, or empty it if it is done. Hand wash stemmed glassware and plastic containers rather than putting them in the dishwasher.

  7. Take out the trash and clean the trash can. Wipe the can, including the underside of the lid, and add a fresh liner.

  8. Clean the floors last. Sweep and mop.

How do I clean and stage the dining and seating area?

Clean and stage the dining table and chairs, along with any bar stools at the counter or island.

  1. Wipe the dining table, the chairs, and any bar stools.

  2. Check the dining table is level and stable. If it wobbles or is damaged, report it with a maintenance request.

  3. Place the decor object in the center of the dining table.

  4. Arrange the chairs neatly around the table, and tuck any bar stools evenly under the counter or island.

How do I stage the kitchen?

Stage the kitchen to Landing's standard once it is clean. For where each item goes, follow Staging the Kitchen.

  1. Put all housewares away in their proper location. Dishes, glassware, cookware, and utensils each have a place.

  2. Organize the drawers neatly, with utensils lined up rather than loose.

  3. Place the knife block next to the stove, and set the Keurig in front of the outlet closest to the sink.

  4. Drape one striped kitchen towel over the oven handle, as centered as you can get it.

  5. Stage the welcome kit on the counter. See Welcome Kit Items for what is included and where each item goes.

  6. Turn on the kitchen's under-cabinet and microwave lights.

  7. Take a photo of the fully cleaned and staged kitchen.

What if an appliance or something else is damaged or missing?

Confirm the appliances turn on and work before you leave. Regular wear and tear is expected, so you do not need to report it. If you see major damage, or something is missing, create a maintenance ticket so Landing can handle it, choosing the issue type that fits, such as "Missing or Damaged Furniture" or "Missing or Damaged Housewares."

Report any other maintenance issue the same way, such as an appliance that does not work, the plumbing, the lighting, an outlet, or a door, choosing the matching issue type.
