Devices Timeline

This guide explains how to play back, scrub, and analyze historical telemetry sensor data using the Devices Timeline.

Written by Ken Panitz

Overview

The Devices Timeline is an interactive, collapsible panel at the bottom of the screen. It allows you to travel back in time to inspect historical sensor readings, play back asset movement along paths, and view past alarms.

To open the Devices Timeline:

  • Click the Devices Timeline icon (time graph/data streaming icon) at the bottom left of the Work Panel.

Playing and Navigating Time

1. The Playhead & Current Datum

The vertical line on the timeline represents the current viewing time:

  • Current Datum Highlight: A green highlight on the timeline track marks the current active telemetry frame datum (with a dimmed/amber border when active).

  • Scrubbing: Click and drag the playhead handle left or right to move backward or forward in time.

  • As you scrub, sensor markers and values on the 3D map update in real time to reflect measurements captured at that exact timestamp.

  • Moving assets slide along their spatial paths to show their position at the selected time.

2. Playback Controls

Use the buttons at the bottom of the panel to control playback:

  • Play / Pause: Click to start or stop automatic time progression.

  • Step Forward / Backward: Advance or rewind the time by one step.

  • Playback Speed Dropdown: Select the time speed multiplier for animation playback:

    • Realtime (1x speed)

    • x5, x15, x30 speed

    • x60 (1 minute per second)

    • x300 (5 minutes per second)

    • x600 (10 minutes per second)

    • x1800 (30 minutes per second)

    • x3600 (1 hour per second)

3. Date and Time Range Picker

Click the date picker inputs at the top left of the timeline to set the boundary limits:

  • Start Date: The beginning of the historical window you want to load.

  • End Date: The end of the historical window.

  • Note: Restricting this window is highly recommended when analyzing large datasets to ensure smooth browser performance.

Workspan Investigation Mode

When analyzing asset movement timelines:

  • Ctrl + Click: Hold Ctrl and click a specific workspan block on the timeline to enter Investigation Mode. This locks the timeline and Selection Inspector onto that workspan's interval.

  • Clear Investigation: Click empty space on the timeline canvas to exit investigation mode.

Timeline Tracks & Event Visuals

The timeline track displays data points and events color-coded by type:

  • Telemetry Data Points: Small markers indicating when readings were registered.

  • Alerts & Alarms: Color-coded markers indicating when safety or warning thresholds were breached:

    • Red: Critical alarm level.

    • Orange/Yellow: Warning level.

    • Green/Blue: Normal event or message.

  • Work Spans: Colour bars that represent the duration of a resource within a work zone, area or task.

  • Hovering over any marker on the timeline displays a tooltip with the reading details, and single-clicking it will select the associated device.

Minimizing the Timeline (Minimal Mode)

If you need more screen space to view the 3D map:

  • Click the Minimise button in the top right of the timeline panel.

  • The large timeline track will collapse into a compact, floating playhead in the bottom-left corner of the map canvas.

  • You can still click Play/Pause or scrub the compact slider.

  • Click the Timeline button on the left Work Panel to expand the full timeline view again.
