The following is a short summary of the habitat type and how to create/enhance it to a "good" condition. For an informed position, please refer to official up-to-date Government guidance or the UK Government's Condition Assessment Sheet.

This type of habitat needs to be assessed by someone who is qualified to undertake a river condition assessment.

Please note that any impact on a canal cannot be offset on a river and any impact on a ditch cannot be offset on a canal

Synonyms: Canalised River

An artificial body of water originally created for the purposes of navigation, whether it is currently navigable or not. Canalised rivers meeting this definition should be recorded as canals.

Special Notes: This habitat excludes Towpaths and other land between the canalside and the nearest field boundary.

How to Create / Enhance to a "Good" condition

Any enhancement must be based on a river condition assessment, by someone qualified to do so.
