💡 NOTE: This article covers contracts that were initially created in Juro (from a Juro template). Contracts that were originally created by uploading a Word/DOCX file work differently — for those, a new version simply replaces the previous one, and any tracked changes in the file are imported as suggestions.
It's common for a counterparty to make their edits in Microsoft Word. When that Word file comes back into a contract created in Juro, your contract stays a Juro contract — Juro compares the uploaded file against your current version and shows you exactly what changed, so nothing is overwritten without your say-so.
What happens when you upload 🔁
When you upload a Word file as a new version, Juro:
Reads the content of the uploaded file;
Compares it against your current contract;
Shows the differences as suggestions (redlines) for you to review.
The contract is locked while you review, and you'll see an import window with two options:
Make all changes — replaces your contract with the uploaded version in full, including all of its formatting;
Import selected — lets you pick which changes to bring in as reviewable redlines, keeping everything else as it was.
Two ways to bring a Word file back in 📥
There are two routes, and they treat tracked changes differently:
Upload new version — Juro treats the file as if all its tracked changes had been accepted, then compares that final text against your contract. The redlines you review are the differences between the two versions, rather than the individual tracked changes from Word.
Juro's Word plug-in — the plug-in syncs the document back automatically and keeps the Word tracked changes as individual suggestions for you to accept or reject in Juro. It also smooths out formatting, so inserted text matches the surrounding style of your contract.
💡 If you're actively negotiating a contract back and forth in Word, we recommend using the Word plug-in — it keeps versions in sync and preserves each tracked change for review.
What about formatting? 🎨
The comparison focuses on the text of your contract. That means:
Text that hasn't changed keeps its original Juro formatting;
Newly added or edited text comes in with its formatting from the Word file (or, via the plug-in, adopts the surrounding Juro formatting);
Formatting-only edits won't appear as redlines. If someone changed a font, made a word bold, or adjusted alignment without changing any text, no suggestion is created and the contract keeps its existing formatting.
If you want to adopt the uploaded file's formatting throughout, choose Make all changes during the review step — this brings in the whole document, formatting included.
What happens to comments? 💬
When you export a contract from Juro as a Word file, Juro embeds hidden identifiers that let it recognise its own comments when the file comes back. So:
Comments from a Juro export that come back (edited or resolved in Word) are updated on the contract — not duplicated;
Brand-new comments added in Word are imported as new external comments;
Existing comments that are missing from the uploaded file are not deleted or resolved — they lose their anchor to a specific spot in the text, but remain visible in the comments panel.
After the upload, you'll be able to choose which comments and suggestions to apply — all of them, or a selection.
💡 NOTE: Comments are matched using the identifiers from the Juro export, not their wording. If someone types a comment into a Word file manually — even with identical wording to an existing comment — it will come in as a separate, new comment.
Good to know ⚡
Lots of changes? If a comparison would produce more than 200 individual suggestions, Juro will replace the contract with the uploaded version instead of listing each change, and let you know there were too many changes to itemise.
Some Word edits can't be imported as redlines — tracked changes that only affect formatting, edits in headers and footers, table styling changes, and image changes won't appear as suggestions.
Comparing versions is separate — the Compare Versions view shows a read-only visual comparison between saved versions; it doesn't create any suggestions on your contract.
