Setting up a Kernel kids account can be done in a few steps. All Kernel kids accounts must be linked to a parent or legal guardian's individual or joint investment account. You can read more about how our accounts are structured here.
If the kids account is connected to a joint account, only one person will be able to administer the kids account.
If you do not have an individual or joint Kernel account
If you already have an individual Kernel account
Please ensure that your account is fully verified; we must ensure the parent or legal guardian's identity and proof of name is verified to link the accounts together. You can complete your account setup by logging into Kernel and then following the prompts.
Follow these steps to set up a Kernel kids account:
Step 1: Log into your Kernel account.
Step 2: Navigate to the menu section in the top right corner and click on ‘Create kids account’.
Step 3: Complete the child's information. You will need:
Your child’s IRD number
One form of child’s ID: NZ birth certificate, NZ or Australian passport, or a certified copy of a foreign passport.
Step 4: Select your relationship with the child.
Step 5 (optional): Add the child’s email address if you’d like to grant them view-only access to the account.
Step 6: Pick the goals that best fit the child.
Step 7: Select how you intend to invest on the child's behalf.
Step 8: Enter the child’s IRD number.
Step 9: Select the type of ID you have for the child and fill in the details.
Step 10: Consent to electronic verification and then click submit.
If the ID check is not successful, the Kernel team will get in touch about anything else that is needed, and again once the child’s account is activated.

What if my child doesn't have an IRD number?
If the child does not yet have an IRD number and you are their parent or legal guardian, you can apply with the IRD online.
