🧾 Taxes: Applying Taxes to Your Menu

How taxes are structured in Virtuo, how to apply them to menu categories with tax profiles, set your tax registration numbers, and how taxes appear on checks and receipts.

Taxes in Maitre'D Virtuo are built from reusable building blocks and then applied to your menu. The individual Tax and Tax Group definitions are set up for your account during onboarding (contact support to add or change them). Day to day, what you manage yourself is applying those taxes to your menu categories and entering your tax registration numbers.

🧩 How taxes are structured

Building block

What it is

Tax

A single tax with a name, a value (a percentage), and an option for whether it's included in the item price or added on top.

Tax Group

A named bundle of one or more taxes (for example, a group that combines two sales taxes).

Tax Profile

Links a tax group to specific menu categories, with an optional start/end date. This is the part you manage.

🗂️ Applying taxes with tax profiles

In the Back Office, open Inventory and go to the Configuration of custom taxes by category (tax profiles) area. To apply taxes:

  • Choose Add a configuration.

  • Select the tax group to apply.

  • Select the categories it applies to.

  • Optionally set a start/end date range and a description.

  • Press Save.

⚠️ Important: adding a configuration for a category completely replaces the taxes on that category. Each category uses one tax group.

🔢 Tax registration numbers

Enter your business's tax/registration numbers in the company or location Payment and taxes settings, on the Taxes tab. Select the tax group, then enter the number for each tax. These numbers print on customer receipts.

🍽️ Marking items taxable

Each product has a Taxable product toggle on its Payment information tab — turn it off for items that shouldn't be taxed. Modifiers have the same toggle. At the POS, an item is taxed only when a tax applies to it.

🍷 Alcohol tax

Categories can be flagged Subject to alcohol tax — on the category's Taxes tab, or in bulk from Inventory's Alcohol tax area. This option appears where alcohol-tax handling is enabled for your location.

🧾 How taxes appear on checks and receipts

On the POS check and on printed receipts, each tax appears as its own line under the subtotal, showing its rate, followed by the amount due. Taxes set to be included in the price are shown separately and labelled Included. Your tax registration numbers print near the bottom of the receipt.

💡 Good to know

  • Quebec's MEV / WEB-SRM (Revenu Québec) has its own separate configuration and requirements.

  • Virtuo does not ship pre-named regional taxes — each tax is named when it's created for your account. Confirm the correct rates for your jurisdiction with your accountant.
