Set up Shopify Markets

Learn how to set up Shopify Markets in your Shopify admin

Updated over a year ago

Activate Shopify Markets

Next, you will use Shopify Markets to add new ship-to countries to your store. In Shopify, a "Market" is a container for the individual country or countries to which customers can ship.

In your Shopify store admin panel, click Settings in the bottom-left corner and then MarketsAdd Market.

You can create as many markets as you want. Each market allows you to adjust pricing and products for that market. If you don’t plan to adjust pricing for each market to start, you can begin with 1 market to represent all international regions.

Type in the Market Name as “International”, click “Add countries/regions” then select all of the countries you would like to sell to, and click “Done” then “Save”.

Click Manage next to International to see the available settings for this Market.

These are the four sections requiring configuration for each Market.

a. Domains and languages

This setting enables you to redirect users visiting your site from this Market to a specific page or subdomain. If you’ve sent the majority of your SKUs to Mayple, you’ll likely not make any changes in this section. Most clients leave this setting as the Primary domain only.

If for some reason, you’ve only sent a small sub-set of SKUs to Mayple, it might make sense to create a landing page for international customers in Shopify that showcases just the items customers can ship to their country. In this case, you might use either of the other two options - Domain or subdomain or Subfolders. This step will typically require a developer.

If you’d like to set up an international landing page that highlights only the products available to ship to this Market, you can use the Subfolder setting here to accomplish that. Here’s how one client has all international traffic see their site:

b. Products and pricing

Presenting prices in local currency has been shown to convert better than selling in USD in foreign markets, so Mayple recommends choosing the local currency for this Market. Be sure the rest of your site text, imagery, $ to free shipping progress bar, and third-party apps are also displaying the local currency price.

To offset the cost of subsidized shipping, some clients choose to increase their product selling prices. This ensures they maintain sufficient margins to make selling cross-border worthwhile for their business.

c. Duties and import taxes

To ensure you collect the correct amount of duties and taxes from the customer during checkout, ensure you check the box to collect duties and import taxes at checkout.

d. Shipping

Now you need to create a Shipping Zone for Mayple Fulfillment. Click Go to shipping.

Click Manage within the General shipping rates profile

Scroll down to find Not covered by your shipping zones then click Create zone

Set the Zone name to “Mayple Fulfillment”. Select the countries that are international, and click Done. Mayple Carrier rates are provided live by our application. First set up the shipping zone by selecting the international countries.

Click Add rate

Select Use carrier or app to calculate rates and select Mayple Carrier from the dropdown. This will give you live rates directly from the app. If you prefer to have a flat rate or other customization, you can also opt to set a flat rate here instead or configure a flat rate in the application.

Configuring a flat rate while using our carrier rates gives you the flexibility to pass on remote delivery charges for customers in remote areas.

The rates should now look like this.

Be sure to finish by clicking Save in the top right!

To maximize the conversion rates, Mayple recommends not charging the customer more than $10 for shipping. If margins are a concern, you can increase the product selling price by a few percentage points in the Markets settings.

This will require to create few more markets for the major shipping regions which is covered in the next section. We can help you configure these markets and the adjustments necessary to protect your margin.

e. Store settings

  • Payments - usually no changes here. Just ensure credit cards are available in every market.

  • Taxes - no changes here. Duties and import taxes were already set for this Market in the previous section.

f. Market Status

Leave this as Inactive until you are ready to go live with Markets and live customer shipments.
