Guide for connecting your Handy to a Hotspot network for troubleshooting

Updated over 5 months ago

If you don't have access to Wi-Fi, are trying to access a network that uses a browser login system, if you're having issues connecting the Handy to Wi-Fi or the connection keeps disconnecting, an option is to use a hotspot as a substitute. Below we guide you instructions on how to achieve this based on your mobile device's operating system.

Why do I need to use Hotspot?

By default, the Handy and the Oh! cannot connect to a Hotel or similar networks due to how the networks request a browser interaction to login and sometimes using a Hotspot can help you diagnose network issues you are facing with your device, as such it is a helpful tool to have around in case you can't properly connect your device no matter the reason.

The devices use very little data, as such you won't need to worry about draining your data usage.

How do I set up a Hotspot?

You can use your smartphone to set up a hotspot. The instructions for this depends on the brand of your phone.

iOS

In iOS devices, you can enable a Hotspot in Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot or Settings > Personal Hotspot. Then toggle Allow Others to Join.

For a more detailed guide, please consult apple's own support article over how to to enable Personal Hotspot.

Make sure you also toggle the option Maximize Compatibility

Android

In Android devices, you can enable a Hotspot in Settings > Hotspot, then toggle Hotspot Wi-Fi.

To maximize compatibility, select configure Wi-Fi Hotspot then set the Band to 2.4GHz

In case this method does not work, you can then toggle the option USB Tethering to enable your phone to act as a router. Just keep in mind that this method requires your phone to be connected to another device via USB to work.

For a more detailed guide, please consult your operating system's guide.

Connecting Handy to the hotspot

You connect the Handy to the hotspot in the same way that you connect to a regular Wi-Fi network. However, if you can't see your hotspot in the list of networks, you most likely need to use a separate device to perform the setup on.

If you're unsure how to connect your Handy, please check out our guides for connecting via Handyverse app or Handyfeeling website and the Handy Onboarding App for both the Handy and the Oh!

I can't connect to a Hotel network

Unfortunately, due to how these networks operate, it is not currently possible to connect to any networks that requires a browser login.

Because neither the Handy™ or The Oh!™ are not capable of opening a browser upon which they can interface with the network's login requirement, as such the only way to connect to those network is by routing it through another network or by using a Hotspot.

Keep in mind that USB Tethering is not available to every device and network, in these scenarios we strongly recommend you use a Mobile Data Hotspot as it consumes little data to operate. As such, you shouldn't need to worry about data usage while synchronizing content locally instead of streaming the content and synchronizing.
