I'm VERY nervous to try a class - can you help?

Feeling nervous about trying a new class is completely normal (we've all been there!), and we’re here to help make your experience as comfortable and enjoyable as possible!

We're here to help – we have a range of posts you can read about finding the right first class, how to set up your space, and what to expect in an Ompractice class.

But if you still would like more support - feel free to reach out to us personally in chat! We're happy to help you with your setup, getting comfortable, and just welcoming you!

A few common worries:

Here are some of the questions we've been asked over the years. (If there's anything you'd like us to add to this list or answer, please ask! We'll keep this updated.)

  • Will everyone be looking at me? While we do have a camera-on policy, everyone is focused on their own practice. (If you'd like to ease your way in, you might consider taking a seated class like tight shoulder and neck which you can take from a chair.)

  • What if I can’t keep up with the class? Our teachers will encourage you to go at your own pace. It’s perfectly fine to take breaks, modify poses, or rest when needed. We have student of all levels and abilities! Here are some tips on finding the right class for you.

  • I'm [not flexible] [injured] [out of shape] [uncomfortable in my body] [in pain]: we started Ompractice to make these practices accessible to everyone. Particularly those of us who need it most! You'll find yourself in community with all kinds of people, bodies, and abilities. This is for you. Here's a little more on the topic.

  • I've never used the camera or Zoom on my computer, phone, or tablet: well this one certainly was more common five years ago! We'd love to help you get set up for Ompractice so you feel comfortable for your first class. Here's what kind of devices you can use, how to set up your space, and some Zoom troubleshooting. (We'd also be happy to hop on a test zoom with you! Just ask!) You can also try joining a Zoom Test Meeting Here on Zoom's website.

  • Do I need any special equipment? Most classes require minimal equipment (or none!) For yoga, a mat is usually helpful, but you can even practice on a carpet with a towel laid out (we also have suggestions for things you can find at home to use as props). Some fitness classes might use light weights or resistance bands, but alternatives and modifications are always offered.

Words of advice from the Ompractice Community!

  • "My advice to new students…. Just do it ☺️ I hated the camera at first but you get used of it. You don’t need to unmute just wave. I can’t imagine life without my Ompractice!" - Lucia

  • "Slow and steady. Find a way to make this not work, but something you enjoy. [Find] rhythm in the routine and the community :-)" - Kenny S.

  • "This practice has helped me in so many ways. After only 5 months of classes I feel stronger, more flexible and definitely more balanced in body and mind. I hope you show up for yourself and that you experience the many unexpected benefits" - Karla

  • "Find something that you really enjoy. Think outside the box for this as gardening, roller skating, dance, and of course yoga are all great physical exercises. If you enjoy it you will keep doing it." - Cheryl
