Contraction Quality Meter

Understanding and improving your contraction quality

Updated over a week ago

The Contraction Quality Meter monitors your Kegel contractions in real time and alerts you if they are associated with excessive intra-abdominal pressure.

This makes your training both safer and more effective.

How does it work?

For each contraction you perform, Perifit Care rates the quality of your Kegels :

  • as "Excellent!"(green) if your intra-abdominal pressure (i.e. the pressure on the deep sensor) is low compared to your pelvic floor contraction (i.e. the pressure on the superficial sensor).

  • as "OK"(orange) if your intra-abdominal pressure is almost equal to your pelvic floor contraction.

  • as "You can do better" (red) if your intra-abdominal pressure is greater than the contraction of your pelvic floor (this generally occurs if you cough, laugh or make a supporting movement).

Jauge de Qualité

You should therefore aim to keep the meter in the green zone most of the time.

For more information on superficial and deep sensors, see the Superficial and Deep sensors article.

Why should I care about the quality of my contractions?

Mastering the art of Kegel is of the utmost importance if you want to train safely and effectively with Perifit Care.

  • Safely: If you push down with your abdominal muscles instead of lifting with your pelvic floor muscles, you exert harmful downward pressure. If this happens too often on an already fragile pelvic floor, it can lead to problems or an increased risk of prolapse.

  • Effectively: because if you squeeze the wrong muscles, you're unlikely to train the pelvic floor muscles. And if you don't train the pelvic floor muscles, you're unlikely to improve your continence, pelvic floor support or sex life. A correct Kegel contraction will also help to draw in the Perifit Care, preventing it from slipping outwards.

How can I improve the quality of my contractions?

In pelvic floor training, the quality of the contraction is similar to a good running or yoga technique. You improve it by knowing the correct form and concentrating relentlessly on achieving it.

For Kegels, this means focusing relentlessly on lifting up rather than pushing down. Similarly, it means concentrating on keeping the pin of the contraction quality meter in the green.

If the pin moves towards the red every time you contract, you can try recalibrating at only 75% of your maximum. This will make the game slightly easier and allow you to concentrate on catching up on your technique with your strength for a few sessions.

If the pin position does not improve after a few sessions, we recommend that you consult your pelvic health specialist to help you refine your technique.

Personalize your Contraction Quality Meter

Under Settings > Exercise Preferences > Contraction Quality Meter > Personalize your Contraction Quality Meter.

This feature allows you to adjust the parameters of the Contraction Quality Meter to better suit the pressure applied on the deep sensor when you cough. Once calibrated, it applies to all games going forward. You can turn it off or reset it at any time.
