This guide details how to set up optimal tracking configurations for Pinterest Ads. You can see more details on why we recommend setting up tracking parameters for Polar Attribution in this article.

Note: If you already have some configuration set up at the campaign level, you only need to add two UTM parameters for attribution in Polar to work. You can simply add the following two parameters alongside those you already have:

&ad_id={adid}&campaign_id={campaignid}

How to bulk edit existing ads:

Step 1. In your Pinterest Business Account, click on “Ads” at the top of your screen, then click on “Reporting”.

Step 2. At the top of the Campaigns Reporting Table, click “Export”.

Step 3. Then click “Bulk sheet for editing or duplicating". Keep the default parameters and click “Start Export” at the bottom of the pop-up window.

Step 4. This will download a spreadsheet to your desktop. Keep in mind that it can take up to 1 minute to download.

Step 5. In the spreadsheet, start by filling out the first column (titled “Action”) with the value “EDIT” from row 3 to the last line of the spreadsheet

Step 6. Copy the below pre-configured URL after replacing <your_website> with your own destination URL.

{lpurl}?utm_source=pinterest&ad_id={adid}&campaign_id={campaignid}&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaign_name}&utm_term={adgroupname}&utm_content={adid}

Step 7. Then copy that same URL into the columns “Organic Pin URL” & “Promoted Pin URL” from row 3 to the last line of the spreadsheet.

Step 8. Go back to your Pinterest Business Account and click on “Ads”, then click on “Bulk Editor”.

Step 9. On the left-hand side of your screen, click on “Upload template”, then click on “Upload a .csv file” and select the spreadsheet you’ve just edited.

Note:

  • If you create new ads you will also need to configure them with adequate tracking parameters. You can either follow the process detailed above or follow the “Configure ad at creation” tutorial below to edit an ad when creating it.

  • If you want to check if an ad was correctly configured or edit a single ad, follow the “Edit a single existing ad” tutorial below

How to configure an ad when creating it:

Step 1. In your Pinterest Business Account, click on “Create” then click on “Create Pin”.

Step 2. Copy the below pre-configured URL after replacing <your_website> with your own destination URL.

{lpurl}?utm_source=pinterest&ad_id={adid}&campaign_id={campaignid}&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaign_name}&utm_term={adgroupname}&utm_content={adid}

Step 3. Paste this URL in the “Add a destination link” text field, then publish your ad.

Where to edit a single ad at its creation

How to edit a single existing ad:

Step 1. In your Pinterest Business Account, click on “Ads” at the top of your screen. Then click on “Reporting”.

Step 2. In your Campaigns Reporting Table, click on the pencil Icon at the left-hand side of the your ad name.

Step 3. Scroll down to the Ads - Set Up detail section.

Step 4. (If you are just checking if the ad was configured, skip the next parts and simply verify the URL corresponds to the tracking template) Copy the below pre-configured URL after replacing <your_website> with your own destination URL.

{lpurl}?utm_source=pinterest&ad_id={adid}&campaign_id={campaignid}&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaign_name}&utm_term={adgroupname}&utm_content={adid}

Step 5. Paste this URL in the “Destination URL” field & save.
