How does ID verification work, and what if it fails?

How the ID check works with Plaid, why you must use your original ID document, and what to do if it fails.

Written by Joe Wigoder

Every applicant completes a quick identity check. It takes a couple of minutes and confirms that you are who you say you are.

Who carries out the check?

Your identity check is carried out by Plaid, a global leader in secure identity verification and financial data. Plaid is trusted by thousands of apps and financial services worldwide.

Plaid takes security extremely seriously:

  • It is certified to ISO 27001, the international standard for information security, and ISO 27701, the international standard for privacy

  • It is independently audited every year to SOC 2 Type II standards

  • Your data is protected with bank-grade encryption (AES-256 and TLS)

Your ID images are only used to verify your identity and are never shared with your landlord or letting agent. You can read more on Plaid's security page.

You must use your original ID

You need to have your physical, original ID document in your hand when you do the check. We can't accept:

  • A photo of your ID shown on another screen, such as a phone, tablet or computer

  • A photocopy, scan or printout of your ID

  • A screenshot or a digital copy of your ID

These will fail the check, so please have the real document with you before you start.

What ID can I use?

A valid, in-date photo ID, such as a passport, national ID card, residence permit or driving licence.

What you'll do

1. Take photos of your original ID. You'll be asked for the front and, where relevant, the back.

2. Take a short selfie. This confirms you're the person on the ID.

Tips for a smooth check

  • Use good lighting and avoid glare on your ID

  • Place your ID on a plain, dark surface

  • Make sure all four corners of the ID are visible

  • Use an ID that hasn't expired

  • Remove glasses or hats for your selfie

What if my check fails?

Don't worry, this happens and is usually down to lighting, glare or not using the original document. You can try again from your dashboard. If it still doesn't work, message us on live chat and we'll send you a new link.
