Overview
Free service discounts let you offer a specific service, a bundle of services, or a patient choice from a list at no charge. You configure free service settings when building a reward, special offer, or automated offer that uses the Free Service discount type.
This article is for practice owners, managers, and admins who set up and maintain free service configurations across the MedCommerce Engine.
Before You Start
You must have Administrator or Manager access to create or edit offers.
Free service configurations apply to Rewards, Special Offers, and Automated Offers in the MedCommerce Engine section of the left-side navigation.
Free services are configured through treatment groups, not through memberships. They are no longer tied to membership benefits.
You need at least one treatment or product in your shop before you can assign it to a free service configuration.
Private special offers do not support the Free Service discount type.
Why It Matters
Well-configured free services help you:
Reduce admin workload with clear selection rules instead of manual redemption handling.
Give patients flexibility when you want them to pick from eligible services (Choose From mode).
Keep redemption predictable when you want every patient to receive the same service (Single Item mode).
Bundle value when you want patients to redeem multiple included services together (Include All mode).
How It Works
Where free services live. You configure free service settings inside the offer builder when you select Free Service as the discount type. The configuration panel appears on rewards, special offers, and automated offers that support this discount type.
Three selection modes:
Single Item — The patient redeems one specified service. Quantity defaults to 1.
Include All — The patient redeems every eligible service included in the offer.
Choose From — The patient selects one or more services from a predefined list. You set the quantity limit to control how many they can pick.
Redemption behavior. Patients redeem free services without a checkout flow. The in-app experience varies by selection mode (single button, bundled list, or selection modal). For a full overview of the patient redemption experience, see Enhanced Free Service Management and Redemption.
Archive vs. delete. Free service configurations follow the same archive pattern as other MedCommerce objects. Archiving removes the configuration from active use but preserves history. There is no permanent delete for live configurations.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Create a free service configuration
Log in to your Admin Panel.
Click Rewards, Special Offers, or Automated Offers in the MedCommerce Engine section of the left-side navigation, depending on where you want the free service offer to live.
Create a new offer or open an existing draft.
Set the discount type to Free Service.
Click Create Free Service (or open the free service configuration panel if one already exists).
Configure the following:
Selection Mode — Choose Single Item, Include All, or Choose From.
Quantity — For Choose From mode, set how many services the patient can select.
Eligible services — Select the treatments or products included in the offer.
Complete the remaining offer fields (title, locations, visibility, dates, and so on).
Save or publish the offer.
Edit a free service configuration
Open the Rewards, Special Offers, or Automated Offers page in the MedCommerce Engine section.
Locate the offer that contains the free service configuration.
Click the three dots on the right side of the offer.
Select Edit.
Open the free service configuration panel.
Adjust the selection mode, quantity, or included services as needed.
Save your changes.
Note: Edits to a live offer follow the same impact rules as other offer types. Patients who have already redeemed the offer may not see retroactive changes. When the change is significant, consider archiving the old offer and creating a new one.
Archive a free service configuration
Locate the offer containing the free service configuration.
Click the three dots on the right side of the offer.
Select Archive.
The offer moves to the Archived tab and is no longer available for new redemptions. Patients who already redeemed the free service retain their redemption history.
Best Practices and Pro Tips
Match the mode to the offer. Use Single Item for a specific complimentary treatment, Include All for bundled value, and Choose From when you want patients to pick their preferred service.
Set quantity limits in Choose From mode. Without a quantity cap, patients may select more services than you intended to give away.
Use Single Item for simplicity. It defaults to quantity 1 and produces the clearest patient experience.
Test in the patient app. After publishing, redeem the offer as a test patient to confirm the correct services appear for each selection mode.
Archive instead of overwriting. If the eligible services or selection rules change significantly, archive the old offer and create a new one so patients mid-redemption are not affected.
Common Mistakes and FAQs
Q: Where do I create a free service configuration?
A: Free service settings appear when you select Free Service as the discount type while creating or editing a reward, special offer, or automated offer in the MedCommerce Engine section of your Admin Panel.
Q: What is the difference between Single Item, Include All, and Choose From?
A: Single Item gives the patient one specified service. Include All lets the patient redeem every service in the offer. Choose From lets the patient pick a set number of services from a list you define.
Q: Can I use free services on private special offers?
A: No. Private offers do not support the Free Service discount type.
Q: Can I tie a free service to a membership benefit?
A: No. Free services are configured through treatment groups on rewards and offers, not through membership benefits.
Q: What happens when I archive a free service offer?
A: The offer moves to the Archived tab and is no longer available for new redemptions. Patients who already redeemed it keep their redemption record.
Q: Can I permanently delete a free service configuration?
