HazMat Inventory: Scanning Offline

Scan without a connection using Airplane Mode, and make sure your device has enough storage.

Written by Jason Ries

Full access required — HazMat Inventory is a full-access feature of SDS Mobile™.

SDS Mobile™ can keep scanning without an internet connection. Scan data — UPC barcodes, photos and notes — is saved on your device and sent to KHA the next time you sync.

Scanning in an area with no cell service or internet

If you know you will be working where there is no cell service or internet connection, we recommend putting your device in Airplane Mode before you begin scanning:

  1. Sign in to SDS Mobile™ while you still have a connection.

  2. Turn on Airplane Mode on your device.

  3. Open HazMat Inventory, choose a binder, and scan items as usual. Everything is saved to your device.

  4. When you finish, you can close the app until you are back in an area with WiFi or cellular service.

  5. Reconnect, open SDS Mobile™ and sync your data. See the HazMat Inventory: Sync Inventory Data article.

Tip: Scanning in Airplane Mode is also the fastest way to scan, because the app does not upload anything between items. When scanning while connected, the app uploads each item as you go, which can slow you down on a weak connection.

Device storage requirements

Because the app saves photos and barcode data on your device while offline, it needs room to work:

  • The app requires a minimum of 9 GB of free storage on your device to scan offline. If your device has less space available, clear out unwanted files and apps before you begin.

  • If your device drops below 9 GB while you are scanning, you will be required to sync your data and delete the items in Synced status before you can continue scanning.

  • Photo data adds up quickly on a large inventory. If you can, sync your device at breaks throughout the day rather than all at once at the end.
