How to install a SmartAC Hardware Kit

This article helps you get a new technician ready to install a SmartAC Hardware Kit. Start with the 17-minute walkthrough video below, then use the step-by-step summary to review each stage.

Before the first install

Make sure the new technician has the following ready:

  1. The SmartAC Pro app downloaded on their phone.

  2. Their login. They sign in with their email, or with their company account, if your company has SAML enabled.

  3. A Hardware Kit (Hub, Water Sensor, Filter Sensor, Comfort Sensor, Water Riser, Comfort Sensor, clip, and Ethernet cable).

  4. The homeowner's Wi-Fi network name and password.

Pro Tip: The app walks you through the entire installation. Remind new technicians to follow along and choose each option carefully.

Step 1: Onboard the homeowner

  1. Open the SmartAC Pro app, sign in, and start a new onboarding from the home screen.

  2. Enter the homeowner's information.

  3. Enter the service address. This should be the address where the equipment is installed, so alerts send your team to the right location. The address auto-populates as you type.

  4. Select the homeowner's maintenance program. Plan names vary depending on your company's offerings.

  5. Review the summary screen with the homeowner to catch any mistakes or spelling errors before moving on.

Step 2: Answer the risk profile questions

These questions tell SmartAC about the system and home.

  • HVAC maintenance frequency: Homeowners on a maintenance program typically receive annual service.

  • Year the HVAC was installed: To the best of your knowledge.

  • Most recent service visit: Select the date of the latest tune-up.

  • Thermostat type: SmartAC works alongside all thermostat types.

  • Number of stories and number of thermostats: If the home has multiple thermostats with multiple systems, the app will prompt you to install additional Hardware Kits later.

  • Decade the home was built: To the best of your knowledge.

Step 3: Capture the system details

  1. Label the system (for example, "Entire House" if one system serves the whole home).

  2. Select the system type: split system, package system, or furnace only. The workflow differs for each, so choose carefully.

  3. Select where the furnace or air handler is located and where the air filter is located.

  4. Take a photo of the condenser nameplate. The photo should be clear, legible, and show the data plate from top to bottom. If the plate is missing or faded, enter the details manually at the bottom of the screen.

Step 4: Install and connect the Hub

  1. Open the Hardware Kit and take out the Hub.

  2. Scan the QR code, then plug the Hub in at a central location in the home, close to where the sensors will be placed.

  3. When the orange light is blinking, connect the Hub to the internet. Wireless (Wi-Fi or WPS) is always preferred. Use the Ethernet cable only when wireless is not possible.

  4. For Wi-Fi: join the Hub's network from your phone, select the homeowner's Wi-Fi network, and enter the password.

  5. The Hub light turns blue when it is connected.

Step 5: Activate and verify the sensors

  1. Take the sensors out of the Hardware Kit and pull the battery tabs. Each sensor light should blink, confirming the battery works.

  2. Choose whether you are using long-life batteries. The standard lithium AA batteries already in the sensors are fine for most installs.

  3. Wait for the Hub to connect to the sensors and confirm they are all online.

Each sensor is color-coded on the back:

  • Blue: Water Sensor

  • Gray: Filter Sensor

  • White: Comfort Sensor

Everything in the Hardware Kit is already paired with the Hub and works out of the box.

Step 6: Place the sensors

Take the water and filter sensors to the furnace or air handler.

Water Sensor

  1. Take a clear photo of the furnace nameplate, located inside the furnace. Confirm the photo is legible.

  2. Select whether the furnace is horizontal or vertical.

  3. Select whether there is a secondary drain pan under the furnace.

  4. Remove the shipping cardboard from the water riser at the bottom of the box. Snap the riser onto the Water Sensor. It attaches magnetically.

  5. Place the sensor in the drain pan.

Why the riser matters: It moves the probes to the bottom of the riser, which avoids false alerts caused by condensation, dust, or debris in the pan. If the pan fills with water, it also lifts the sensor out of the water so it does not drown.

Filter Sensor

  1. If the filter is at the furnace, place the sensor behind the air filter in the blower cabinet. A good spot is magnetically attached to the blower housing, where airflow is strong.

  2. Enter the filter details: filter type (select "no special type or other" for unbranded filters), thickness, and size (for example, 16 x 25 x 4 inches).

  3. Select when the filter was last replaced.

  4. Confirm the details look correct.

  5. If the zone has additional filters, add them as non-monitored filters. These do not have a sensor behind them.

Comfort Sensor

  1. Choose a supply register in a main living space, such as a living room or master bedroom. Avoid bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms, where temperature swings can skew readings.

  2. Select the register location in the app (for example, wall).

  3. Place the sensor in the center of the register. The temperature is read from the middle of the sensor, so do not place it on the edge or on a center bar.

  4. If the register is non-magnetic (such as aluminum), use the included clip. It is in the small box under the card, with the Ethernet cable. The clip snaps onto the sensor magnetically and rotates, allowing you to position it for optimal airflow.

  5. Select the room where the sensor was placed.

Good placement means strong airflow across the sensor and a duct that is not extremely far from the equipment.

Step 7: Check signal strength

Once all three sensors are in place, the Hub checks the signal from each one. This can take up to 30 seconds. A green check mark on every sensor means you are ready to continue.

Add an additional water sensor (optional)

If your company includes additional water sensors, add them to monitor other leak risks. Skip this step if you are not including one. Unlike the sensors in the Hardware Kit, additional water sensors must be manually paired with the Hub.

  1. Check that the back of the sensor is blue.

  2. Pull the battery tab and confirm the light blinks.

  3. Confirm the Hub serial number shown in the app matches the Hub you are pairing to.

  4. Push up on the bottom of the sensor to open it. Inside is an orange pairing button. The Hub has an orange pairing button on the back.

  5. Hold both buttons down at the same time until the sensor light blinks, then release both. Replace the sensor cover.

  6. Verify the connection in the app. A green check mark means the sensor is communicating with the Hub.

  7. Select leak detection, label the sensor (for example, "Kitchen Sink"), and save.

  8. Select whether it will be used in a drain pan. If not, select no accessories. The riser is not needed.

Good places for additional water sensors include under a kitchen sink, near a water heater, under a bathroom sink, and by a washing machine.

Important: Water sensors must always be placed flat with the probes facing down. Never place them upside down or sideways.

Step 9: Finish the install and talk to the homeowner

  1. If the home has another thermostat or system, select yes and repeat the setup with an additional Hardware Kit. Otherwise, select no additional thermostats.

  2. Remind the homeowner that they can schedule service and order filters directly in their homeowner app.

  3. Explain Hub placement. If the Hub is on Wi-Fi or WPS, it can be unplugged and moved to another spot in the home. If it is connected with the Ethernet cable, it cannot be moved or unplugged. Unplugging it causes a loss of sensor data.

  4. Show the homeowner the QR codes in the Apple and Android homeowner apps, and help them download and sign in.

Getting help during an install

New technicians should never hesitate to contact Pro Support. Calls are answered in the order they are received, and there is no phone menu to go through.

  • Find the Pro Support number in the SmartAC Pro app under Account and under Help.

  • During onboarding, tap the three dots in the top-right corner of the app to chat with support or call support.
