Updated over 3 weeks ago

Overview

This guide explains how to link Schwab custodial accounts to SMArtX so:

  • Account data flows into the SMArtX platform

  • Trading permissions are enabled

Schwab account linking typically involves:

  1. Authorizing SMArtX as a TAMP money manager

  2. Having the client sign a Limited Power of Attorney (LPOA)

Linking client accounts to the TAMP FA Master (repcode)

⚠️Important⚠️

Account linking must be completed directly with Schwab. SMArtX cannot initiate or manage this process

If you need your SMArtX TAMP Master and SMArtX Manager Master numbers, refer to your onboarding email or request them from Client Services.

Before You Begin

Ensure you have the following:

  • A list of client accounts approved for TAMP business

  • Access to Schwab Advisor Center

  • Contact information for your Schwab Service Team

  • Completed Limited Power of Attorney (LPOA) forms for each client account

Schwab Account Linking Process

Step 1 β€” Confirm or Establish a TAMP FA Master

Contact your Schwab Service Team to verify whether your firm already has a TAMP-enabled FA Master account.

If not already enabled:

If a TAMP FA Master does not exist:

Ask Schwab to create a new FA Master approved for TAMP business.

During setup, confirm:

  • Asset-based or transaction-based pricing

  • Margin approval

  • Options approval (Level 3 recommended)

Note: Client accounts using SMArtX will ultimately be linked to this TAMP FA Master.

Step 2 β€” Link Client Accounts to the TAMP FA Master

Work with your Schwab Service Team to:

  • Identify accounts that will use SMArtX

  • Link those accounts to the TAMP FA Master

This allows accounts to feed correctly for trading and data transmission.

Step 3 β€” Complete the Managed Account Marketplace LPOA

Each client must complete the Managed Account Marketplace Money Manager Limited Power of Attorney (LPOA).

Advisor actions:

  1. Provide the LPOA form to the client for signature

  2. Submit the completed paperwork to Schwab via:

    • Schwab Service Center, or

    • DocuSign

When completing the LPOA:

  • In Section 3 – Advisor, TAMP and Manager Authorizations

    • Select Trading Authorization only

Step 4 β€” Confirm the Account Connection

After submitting the LPOA, monitor the Alert Center in Schwab Advisor Center for approval.

Once approved, verify the connection:

  1. Open the client account

  2. Navigate to: Account Menu β†’ Associated Items β†’ Master Accounts

  3. Confirm SMArtX appears in the list.

This confirms the account is connected and transmitting to SMArtX.

⚠️If SMArtX does not appear under Master Accounts:

Contact your Schwab Service Team ask them to verify:

  • The LPOA was processed

  • The account is linked to the TAMP FA Master

What Happens Next

Once linking is complete:

  • Schwab begins transmitting account data to SMArtX

  • Accounts will appear in the SMArtX platform

  • SMArtX confirms when accounts are ready for trading and rebalancing

Important Notes

Schwab uses a shared (bulk) data feed with SMArtX.

No additional technical setup is required.
