You may see a game advertise a "Session Zero" for their adventure. But what is a Session Zero, and what should you expect from one?
What is a Session Zero?
A Session Zero is a meeting between the host and the Players before the first session of a campaign or a one-shot.
Why is a Session Zero important?
Session Zeros set expectations, establish boundaries, and make sure everyone is on the same page for a fun and respectful experience.
What Happens at a Session Zero?
Every Session Zero is run a bit differently, but here are the kinds of things you might discuss as a group:
Homebrew Content: Will the game allow custom content, rules, or settings?
Rules Philosophy: Will the rules be strictly followed, or will the game go with the "Rule of Cool"?
Resolving Disagreements: How will rule disputes or unclear moments be handled?
Safety Tools: What systems are in place to ensure everyone feels safe and respected?
Handling Absences: What happens if a player misses a session?
House Rules: Will there be any custom rules for the table?
Tone of the Game: Is the campaign silly, dark, serious, or somewhere in between?
Character Creation: Often time is included for creating characters together during Session Zero.
Does Every Game Offer a Session Zero?
Not always. It's up to the host of each game to decide if they offer a Session Zero and what it includes. Be sure to check the game listing or reach out to the host if you're unsure.
