You may see a Game Master advertise a "Session Zero" for their game. But what is a Session Zero, and what should you expect from one?

What is a Session Zero?

A Session Zero is a meeting between the Game Master and the Players before the first session of a campaign or one-shot.

Why is a Session Zero important?

Session Zeros set expectations, establish boundaries, and make sure everyone is on the same page for a fun and respectful experience.

What Happens at a Session Zero?

Every Game Master runs their Session Zero differently, but here are the kinds of things you might discuss as a group:

  1. Homebrew Content: Does the GM allow custom content, rules, or settings?

  2. Rules Philosophy: Does the GM strictly follow the rules, or go with the "Rule of Cool"?

  3. Resolving Disagreements: How will rule disputes or unclear moments be handled?

  4. Safety Tools: What systems are in place to ensure everyone feels safe and respected?

  5. Handling Absences: What happens if a player misses a session?

  6. House Rules: Does the GM have any custom rules for their table?

  7. Tone of the Game: Is the campaign silly, dark, serious, or somewhere in between?

  8. Character Creation: Some GMs include time for creating characters together during Session Zero.

Does Every Game Master Offer a Session Zero?

Not always. It's up to each GM to decide if they offer a Session Zero and what it includes. Be sure to check the game listing or reach out to the Game Master if you're unsure.
