How Stora handles subscription pricing when unit allocations are changed

Updated today

When you change the number of units allocated to a subscription in Stora, it’s essential to update the pricing to ensure accurate billing. This guide explains how pricing updates work, including pro-rata adjustments for changes made mid-billing period.

Allocating Subscription Units

If you add units to a subscription, you need to update the pricing. Allocating more units does not automatically change the subscription price.

  1. Go to the subscription’s detail page in Stora.

  2. Click Edit unit type in the pricing section.

  3. Update the number of units and review the new pricing details.

  4. Click Save changes to apply the updated pricing.

⚠️ Always review the pricing after changing unit allocations to avoid incorrect charges.

Understanding Pro-Rata Adjustments

If you change unit allocations partway through a billing cycle, Stora calculates a pro-rata charge. This means the customer pays only for the extra units for the remainder of the current cycle.

  • Immediately: If you allocate additional units immediately, Stora calculates the extra charge on a pro-rata basis, meaning customers are billed only for the remaining period in the current subscription cycle.

  • On next renewal: The full subscription price for the updated unit count will apply starting from the subsequent billing period.

Example: If a subscription originally included 1 unit billed at £50/month and is increased to 2 units in the middle of the month, Stora would calculate the additional charge for the remaining days in the current cycle. From the next month onwards, the charge would reflect 2 units at £100/month.

Good to know

To avoid issues or unexpected results when changing unit allocations, consider the following:

  • Always Review Pricing: Make sure to update pricing immediately after changing unit allocations.

  • Understand Pro-Rata Calculations: Be aware that mid-period adjustments will incur a proportional charge instead of a full monthly price.

  • Double-Check Invoices: Review invoices after allocation changes to confirm they align with your expectations based on the applied adjustments.

⚠️ If you don’t update the pricing after changing unit allocations, customers may be charged incorrectly.
