Before starting your geofencing projects on site, you'll need to make sure all Tended devices are assigned to your project or site.
In this article you'll find information on how to assign your devices efficiently to your projects or individual sites. Let's dive in π
Please note: Devices will not be able to receive information about safe zones (geofences) until they have been assigned to a project or site.
Wearable mode or Asset mode - what's the difference?
You can assign devices in Wearable mode when worn by track workers or in asset mode when attached to on-site equipment such as marker boards or RRVs for geotagging projects.

Assign a device to a project or a site - what's the difference?
You can choose to assign a device to a project or individual site(s) within a project.
Assign device to | Device behaviour |
A project | Will receive safe zone information from all live sites within the project |
A site | Will only receive safe zone information from chosen site(s) |
We recommend assigning devices to individual site(s) when you have a large project with multiple live work sites. Find out how to assign a device to a project here π
Please note: A device can only be assigned to one project at a time but it can be assigned to multiple sites within that project.
Bulk device assignment - upload devices with a CSV file
For maximum efficiency you can upload a CSV file, containing the device ID you want assigning to a project, and multiple devices can be assigned at once.
What's a CSV file?
A CSV file, which stands for "Comma-Separated Values," is a simple text file that stores data. Each line in the file represents a row in the table, and the values in that row are separated by commas or in table form.
You can create a CSV file quickly from a spreadsheet π
How to assign devices via CSV file
Log-in to the Tended Dashboard
Click the "Projects" tab
Find the project you want to assign the devices to and click "View project"
Click the "Devices" tab at the top of the page
Click "Assign device" then click "CSV"
If your CSV file includes a header, click "CSV includes header row"
Click "Upload CSV" and choose the correct file from your documents
You'll now see all your device IDs displayed in two columns. In the left hand column, click "Validate data"
If there are any issues with the data you can edit the device IDs in this left column and re-validate
When you're happy, click "Assign devices" in the right hand column
Now view your devices in the devices table
π‘ Tended tip: set up auto-assign parameters when assigning your devices in bulk for maximum efficiency. Find out more below π
Auto-assign parameters for your devices
Using auto-assign parameters is a really efficient way to control devices information before they're assigned to your project or site.
Choose to assign devices with pre-set information such as:
Wearable or Asset mode
Site assignment
Nickname
Asset type
How to set auto-assign parameters for your devices
Log-in to the Tended Dashboard
Click the "Projects" tab
Find the project you want to assign the devices to and click "View project"
Click the "Devices" tab at the top of the page
Click "Assign device" and then choose to assign your device(s) via QR code, manually or CSV
Now, on the right side of the screen you can choose to pre-set information about your devices
Choose "Wearable" or "Asset" mode
In "Site assignment" choose to assign your device(s) to specific sites
Choose to give your device(s) nicknames. i.e. corresponding to the site asset they're attached to
Choose to give your device(s) an asset type i.e. marker board, RRV
When you've set the auto-assign parameters, you're ready to assign your devices!
