Flights by Team

Updated over 4 months ago

This feature is available for the following products:

Creating flighted teams is very easy. The most common and popular format at a golf club is the five 9-hole match round-robin invitational. The two-person teams are separated into flights, where they then play matches against everyone within their flights. Another example of when creating flights by team is necessary is a two-person Four-Ball stroke play tournament where flights separate the field of teams.

In this article, we will discuss how to create flighted teams. To watch a short instructional video on this subject, Click Here.

Enabling Player Flights:

To enable team flights, go to Event/League > Event/League Profile > General Settings. Select the option to use multiple flights (as shown below).

Accessing Flights:

If team flights are used for the entire league or event, go to Golfers > Divisions/Flights/Teams > Manage Team List & Flighted Teams.

If you are creating flights that will only be used for a specific round, go to Rounds > Round Divisions/Flights/Teams > Manage Team List & Flighted Teams.

(Note: For one round events, go to Golfers > Divisions/Flights/Teams > Manage Team List & Flighted Teams.)

You can create flights using the following options:

  • Auto-Fill Flights, or

  • Create Flight Manually.

Auto- Filling Flights:

If you would like the system to create flights using specific parameters, select "Auto-Fill Flights" (as shown below).

To auto-fill flights, follow these instructions:

  1. Select the primary method of flighting the teams.

  2. Then, select the first tie-breaking method and the second tie-breaking method (if necessary). Why would you want tie-breaking? Say you choose the flights to be created by Combined Playing Handicap, but two teams have the same combined Playing Handicap. To fairly place and seed one team above the other, we need to set a tie-breaking method. The following flight and tie-breaking methods are available:

    1. Combined Handicap Index: Use the combined Handicap Index for all players on the team.

    2. Combined Playing Handicap: Use the combined Playing Handicaps for all players on the team from a selected course/tee. You can also select to limit the Playing Handicap difference between the partners or reduce each player's Playing Handicap if their Playing Handicap difference is greater than a set number.

    3. Lowest Handicap Index of any Player on Team: Use the lowest player Handicap Index of the team.

    4. Lowest Playing Handicap of any Player on Team: Use the lowest player Playing Handicap (of a selected tee) of the team. You can also select to limit the Playing Handicap difference between the partners or reduce each player's Playing Handicap if their Playing Handicap difference is greater than a set number.

    5. Member's Handicap Index: Flights will be created by looking at the Member's Handicap Index instead of the Guest's. To distinguish between member or guest, make sure the member is added to the event roster (via individually, spreadsheet, master roster). This option is typically only used for tie-breaking in a member guest format.

    6. Member's Playing Handicap: Use the member's Playing Handicap from a selected tee. You can also select to limit the Playing Handicap difference between the partners or reduce each player's Playing Handicap if their Playing Handicap difference is greater than a set number.

    7. Tournament Results: If you have a qualifying round to seed the teams, and the qualifying round was including in the event you set up, select the tournament within that round, and those scores are to create the flights

    8. Combined Differential (GHIN Customers Only): Ties will be broken by the sum of the differentials between the team players. For instance, Player A's Handicap Differential is 37, and his teammate's Handicap Differential is 38. Their Combined Differential is 75. How is a player's differential computed? Click Here for info.

  3. Below the flighting method and tie-breakers, select the number of flights or number of teams in each flight (as shown below).

  4. Click "Next."

  5. Review the flights (as shown below). By default, the flights are named by number (e.g., Flight 1, Flight 2). You can override and re-name them (if necessary). You can also adjust how many teams are in each flight.

  6. If teams with the same index should be placed in the same flight, check the box for "Teams having the same combined index should be placed in the same flight. Flight sizes will be adjusted automatically to take ties into consideration."

  7. After reviewing, click "Next."

The flighted teams will then be created.

Create Flights Manually:

If you'd like to create flights using your own method, placing the teams within the flights yourself, select "Create Flights Manually." To do this, follow these instructions:

  1. Select "Create Flights Manually."

  2. Name the first flight (e.g., 1st flight, championship flight).

  3. Click "Next."

  4. Click on the teams to be included in the first flight.

  5. After all the teams are in that flight, click "Save."

  6. Click "Add New Flight."

  7. Repeat steps 4, 5 & 6 until all flights are created.

The sequence below shows the process of creating flighted teams manually.

Naming Flights:

When filling out the flight name, if the name of the Flight does not contain the word "Flight", it is automatically added (e.g., If a flight's name is "Nicklas", it will appear in the leaderboard as "Nicklas Flight"). You can disable this automatic inclusion of the word "Flight" in the flight name from the Event/League Profile - Tournament & Scoring. To do so following these directions:

  1. Go to Event/League > Event/League Profile > Tournaments & Scoring.

  2. In the Leaderboards section, find the settings for "Flight Name on Leaderboards."

  3. Check the option "Do not append the word "Flight" to the Flight Name on Leaderboards" to remove the word "Flight" from being automatically appended to a Flight's Name on Leaderboards (as shown below).

  4. Click "Save."

Refilling Flights:

If your flights are created using auto-fill, often, there may be a change, and you need to re-flight. To re-fill the flights after changes, follow these instructions:

  1. Go to Divisions/Flights/Teams > Manage Team Lists and Flighted Teams > Manage Flights by Team.

  2. Select "Add New Flights/Refill Flights."

  3. The filling parameters will be retained, but you can change them if necessary.

  4. Click "Next."

  5. Review the flights.

  6. Click "Next," and the flights will be refilled.

The sequence below shows the process.

If you run a weekly league, created the flights using playing handicap or handicap index, and after every handicap index update, you re-fill the flight. This can be done using our Automatic Re-Fill feature. For more details, Click Here.

Manually Changing Flight Membership:

After flights are created, you can manually change flight membership for specific teams (if necessary). This is often needed when there are changes after the initial creation of the flights.

This can be done by going to Divisions/Flights/Teams > Manage Team Lists > Manage Flights by Team > Manage Flight Membership (as shown below).

The teams and their currently selected flight will be listed on the flight table (as shown below).

You can change their flight membership by selecting the desired flight. At the top, you can:

  • Select the flight(s) to manage membership

  • Display all teams or teams not part of any flight

  • Select a team sort method

  • Search for a specific team

Re-ordering Flight Order:

Flights are listed in a particular order on the leaderboard and reports. You can view and change the sort order by following these instructions:

  1. Go to Divisions/Flights/Teams > Manage Team Lists and Flighted Teams.

  2. Click "Re-sort Flights."

  3. Select to re-sort the flight order alphabetically or by minimum Combined Handicap Index in each flight (flights with the lowest Handicap Indexes listed first).

  4. Click "Go."

You can also manually adjust the sort order by clicking and dragging the elevator bars (as shown below).
