Player Flights

Updated over 5 months ago

Player Flights are often used in events and leagues to create pairings and score tournaments. When creating player flights, you are assigning individual players to flights. If you would like to create team flights instead, Click Here.

In this article, we will discuss how to create player flights. To watch a short instructional video on this subject, Click Here.

Enabling Player Flights:

To enable player flights, go to Event/League > Event/League Profile > General Settings. Select the option to use multiple flights (as shown below).

Accessing Flights:

If creating player flights to be used for the entire league or event, go to Golfers > Divisions/Flights/Teams > Manage Flighted Golfers.

If you are creating flights that will only be used for a specific round, go to Rounds > Round Divisions/Flights/Teams > Manage Flighted Golfers (Note: For one round events, go to Golfers > Divisions/Flights/Teams > Manage Team Lists).

You can create flights using the following options:

  • Auto-Fill Flights

  • Create using Custom Field

  • Create Flight Manually

Auto-Filling Flights:

The first option in creating flights is to auto-fill flights:

  • By Handicap Index: Create Flights by player Handicap Indexes.

  • by Playing Handicap: Create Flights by Playing Handicaps from a specific tee. If multiple tees are used, you will set default tees for each player. For information on doing this, Click Here.

  • by Entry Number: Create Flights by the order in which the players were entered into the system. Players can be entered into the system by spreadsheet, master roster, or by going to Golfers > Manually Add Players to Roster.

  • by Tournament Results: Create flights by using the results from a tournament already completed in the event or league. For instance, consider a 36-hole individual stroke play tournament where the field is split into flights going into Round 2. Select the stroke play tournament results to be used to create the flights.

  • by Age/Gender: Create flights by age and/or gender. In order to use this option Gender and Date of Birth must be entered for your players into the player roster, if not done already.

Select the date to be used when calculating each player's age. If the players need to be flighted by gender, make sure that option is checked. Otherwise, the flights will be created solely by looking at age, therefore creating flights with mixed genders. Are the flights to be divided by specific age range or is there to be a fixed number of players per flight? For instance, maybe there is a 12-14 year old flight. In that case, select the first option. Maybe there are to be only two flights (Jr Flight and Sr Flight) in which the field is to be split evenly into both flights. If so, select the second option.

In the sequence below, flights are being creating by specific age and gender. Enter the number of flights to be created for each gender (males on the left, females on the right), then name each flight and add the date ranges.

In the sequence below, we are creating a fixed number of flights (3 flights for males and 2 flights for females). When clicking next, The summary of flights will be displayed where you can optionally rename or change the number of players in each flight.

If selecting to generate the flights by Handicap Index, Playing Handicap, or Entry Number, you will also need to determine the number of flights by:

  • Number of Golfers Per Flight: The number of flights is determined by the flight field size. You can override exactly how many players are to be placed in each flight in the next step.

  • Number of Flights: The number of flights is determined by the number entered here. If you enter "3", exactly three flights will be created, no matter the field size. If auto-filling flights by Handicap Index or Playing Handicap, you can also specific the maximum handicap index for each flight. If a player exceeds the maximum limit, they will not be placed in that flight.

After selecting the number of flights, click "Next". Review the flights (as shown below). Make any flight name changes or flight size changes if necessary. If flighting by Handicap Index, you can also select to always place players with the same Handicap Index into the same flight. If left unchecked, the tie will be broken alphabetically.

Click "Next" and the flights will be generated.

Automatically Create Flights Using a Custom Field:

The next option is to create flights by using a custom field. If you uploaded players via spreadsheet, and have a column that identifies what flight everyone is in (as shown below), you can use that column (custom field) to create the flights.

To use this method, select the custom field and click "Next". The flights will then be generated.

Create Flights Manually:

The next option is to create flights manually. To do this, follow these instructions:

  1. Select "Create Flights Manually"

  2. Name the first flight (e.g. 1st flight, championship flight, etc)

  3. Click "Next".

  4. Click on the players to include them in the first flight.

  5. After all the players are in that flight, click "Save".

  6. Click "Add New Flight".

  7. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all flights are created.

The sequence below shows the process:

Naming Flights:

When filling out the flight name, if the name of the Flight does not contain the word "Flight", it is automatically added (e.g., If a flight's name is "Nicklas", it will appear in the leaderboard as "Nicklas Flight"). You can disable this automatic inclusion of the word "Flight" in the flight name from the Event/League Profile - Tournament & Scoring. To do so following these directions:

  1. Go to Event/League > Event/League Profile > Tournaments & Scoring.

  2. In the Leaderboards section, find the settings for "Flight Name on Leaderboards."

  3. Check the option "Do not append the word "Flight" to the Flight Name on Leaderboards" to remove the word "Flight" from being automatically appended to a Flight's Name on Leaderboards (as shown below).

  4. Click "Save."

Refilling Flights:

If your flights are created using auto-fill, oftentimes there may be a change and you need to re-flight. To re-fill the flights after changes, go back to Manage Flighted Golfers > Add New Flights/Refill Flights. Make sure the option to "Refill Existing Flights" is selected and finish the flight setup. The flights will then be refilled.

The sequence below shows the process:

If you run a weekly league, created the flights using playing handicap or handicap index, and after every handicap index update you re-fill the flight, this can be done using our Automatic Re-Fill feature. For more details, Click Here.

Manually Changing Flight Membership:

After flights are created, you can manually change flight membership for specific players (if necessary). This is often needed when there are changes after the initial creation of the flights.

This can be done by going to Divisions/Flights/Teams > Manage Flighted Golfers > Manage Flight Membership (as shown below).

The players and their currently selected flight will be listed on the flight table (as shown below).

You can change their flight membership by selecting the desired flight. At the top, you can:

  • Select the flight(s) to manage membership

  • Display all players or players not part of any flight

  • Select a player sort method

  • Search for a specific player

Re-sorting the Flight Order:

Flights are listed in a certain order on the leaderboard and reports. You can view and change the sort order by following these instructions:

  1. Go to Golfers > Divisions/Flights/Teams > Manage Flighted Golfers > Re-sort flights.

  2. Select to re-sort the flight order alphabetically or by minimum Handicap Index in each flight (flights with the lowest Handicap Indexes listed first).

  3. Click "Go".

You can also manually adjust the sort order by clicking and dragging the elevator bars (as shown below).

Printing Flights:

You can print a flight report by following these instructions:

  1. Go to Golfers > Divisions/Flights/Teams > Manage Flighted Golfers > Print Flights.

  2. Select the order method to be used when listing players within flights. The position within flight means the position they are ordered in when editing the flight membership.

  3. Click "Print" and the report (shown below) will be produced.

If you created flights using auto-fill, you can print an "auto-fill flight report" that breaks down how the flights were created using your selected parameters. To do this, go to Golfers > Divisions/Flights/Teams > Manage Flighted Golfers > Auto-Fill Flights Report.

If the available reports are not what you are looking for, you can design and create your own flighted reports using the Report Composer.
