Warning: Setting up the IP Safelist incorrectly can block you and your users from Updox. Only change these settings if you know how your organization's IP addresses are assigned. If you're not sure, check with your IT team first.
What is IP Safelisting?
IP Safelisting lets you choose which IP addresses your users can access Updox from. Users who try to log in from any other IP address are blocked.
By default, the safelist is empty. Users can log in from any IP address in your region.
As soon as you add one entry, only the IP addresses on the list can access Updox.
Note: Updox already blocks access from outside your region, such as outside the United States or Canada. The IP Safelist can't be used to allow access from outside your region.
Who can set up IP Safelisting?
Only Account Holders.
How do I open the IP Safelist?
In the left-hand menu, click Inbox.
Click Admin in the top right, then click Practice Security Settings.
On the Security Settings page, scroll to IP Safelisting, or click IP Safelist on the left.
The Security Settings page is also where you manage Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
What formats can I use?
Format | Example | Notes |
IP range (CIDR notation) |
| Recommended for most offices |
IP range (base IP-subnet mask) |
| Also works for ranges |
Single IP address |
| ⚠️ Not recommended unless your office has a static, public IP address |
Why not a single IP? Most internet providers assign office IP addresses automatically (called DHCP), so your IP can change. If a single IP is your only entry and it changes, everyone will be locked out.
How do I add an IP address to the safelist?
Open the IP Safelist. See the steps above.
Check "Your current IP address is" on the page. Make sure your own IP address is covered, so you don't lock yourself out.
Type an IP address or range into the field.
Click Add to list.
Repeat for each IP address or range you want to allow.
A banner tells you whether your current IP address matches an entry on the list.
Can I turn an entry off without deleting it?
Yes. You can disable an entry and turn it back on later, or delete it completely.
What happens when a user logs in from an IP that isn't on the list?
They're blocked from logging in and see a message saying access isn't allowed from their location.
I got locked out because of the IP Safelist. What do I do?
Contact Updox Support Live Agent. They can clear the IP Safelist for your account.
