Why is the shipping quote high?

How packed size, route, service level and carrier availability affect shipping quotes, and what sellers can check.

Shipping prices depend on the packed piece, route and selected service. A light object can still be expensive when its packaging is bulky, and freight or remote-destination services can cost substantially more than standard parcels.

What affects the quote

  • Packed dimensions and actual weight — carriers generally price using the greater of actual and volumetric weight.

  • Origin and destination — distance, remote-area access and cross-border handling affect cost.

  • Category and handling needs — furniture, fragile pieces, crating and specialist handling use different services.

  • Service level — parcel, scheduled freight, white-glove, packing and insurance do not have the same price.

  • Carrier availability and current surcharges — rates can change between routes and dates.

How to improve the result

  1. Enter accurate packed dimensions, weight, category and shipping origin in the Vendor Dashboard.

  2. Use compact but safe packaging; do not understate dimensions or remove required protection.

  3. Compare the service levels offered on the order rather than relying on a generic discount percentage.

  4. If you already have a suitable carrier agreement, compare it with the integrated options and use the manual-shipping path when appropriate.

  5. Request a custom quote when the available options do not fit the piece or route.

The platform does not guarantee a fixed carrier discount. The exact amount shown on the order or checkout is the source of truth for that shipment.

When a high separate shipping amount may hurt conversion

For heavy pieces, the seller and The Oblist may agree to include a shipping contribution in a specific market price. This is a coordinated commercial strategy, not an automatic checkout rule. See How to include part of the shipping cost in market pricing for heavy pieces.
