What does it mean that I control my own keys?

Written by David Alfonzo Gauna Martinez

When we say that you control your own keys, we're talking about one of the most important concepts in the crypto world: whoever controls the keys, controls the money. 💰

At Wallib, this applies specifically to your on-chain Bitcoin pocket. That's where you can truly say:

"This BTC is mine, and only I can move it." 🔐

🔑 1. What are "keys" in crypto?

In the crypto world, your money doesn't live "in the app" — it lives on the blockchain. What gives you access to those funds are two things:

  • 🔓 Public key: something like your account number. It can be shared.

  • 🔐 Private key / seed phrase: the real "master key."

    • It's used to sign transactions and move your funds.

    • Whoever holds that key has real control of the money.

When you control your own keys, it means you don't depend on a third party (a bank, exchange, or company) to move your funds. 🚀

💜 2. How this works on Wallib: the on-chain Bitcoin pocket

On Wallib, your on-chain Bitcoin pocket is designed so you can have self-custody:

  • The private key (or the phrase that represents it) is under your control.

  • Wallib gives you the interface, the experience, and the tools to use it… but does not have access to that key. ❌

This means that:

  • ✋ Only you can authorize movements of that BTC.

  • 🧱 No one at Wallib can access that pocket and move your funds for you.

  • 🛡️ If you properly protect your keys, you're exercising the purest form of financial sovereignty.

This is the 100% crypto-native part of the experience: your on-chain BTC, on your own terms.

⚡ 3. What about Bitcoin on Lightning (LN) and USDT?

Wallib is a hybrid wallet: it combines the best of the crypto world with the best of the traditional financial system. 🌉

For technical and regulatory reasons:

  • The Bitcoin Lightning Network (LN) pocket ⚡

  • And the USDT pocket 💵

are held under Wallib's custody.

That means:

  • On LN and USDT, Wallib manages the key and channel infrastructure on your behalf.

  • You see your balance, operate from the app, and send payments, but you don't directly manage the private keys for those pockets.

📌 Why is it set up this way?

  • LN requires channels, liquidity, and constant technical management.

  • USDT and connections to the traditional financial world are subject to specific rules and regulatory frameworks.

The idea is for you to have:

  • 💜 Self-custody where it makes the most sense (on-chain BTC).

  • 🛰️ Managed custody where more infrastructure and compliance are required (LN and USDT).

⚖️ 4. Benefits and responsibilities of controlling your own keys

Controlling your own keys in the on-chain Bitcoin pocket is powerful, but it comes with responsibilities.

✅ Benefits

  • 🔓 No central entity can freeze those funds.

  • 🧍 You don't depend on a third party to move your on-chain BTC.

  • 💜 You keep the original spirit of Bitcoin: "Not your keys, not your coins; if they're your keys, they're your coins."

🧠 Responsibilities

  • ❗ If you lose your seed phrase or your keys, no one can recover them — not even Wallib.

  • 🚨 If someone else gains access to your private keys, they can move your funds without your permission.

  • 🔐 You're the one who needs to take security seriously:

    • Don't store the phrase in screenshots.

    • Don't send it by email, WhatsApp, or social media.

    • Don't write it somewhere easy to find.

🧩 5. What can and can't Wallib do with your funds?

In your on-chain Bitcoin pocket 🟠

  • ✅ Wallib can give you the app, the experience, and the tools to sign transactions.

  • ❌ Wallib cannot move those funds without you.

  • ❌ Wallib cannot recover your keys if you lose them.

In your LN and USDT pocket ⚡💵

  • ✅ Wallib manages the technical infrastructure and custody.

  • ✅ It can help you with reviews, support, monitoring, and compliance.

  • ❌ It does not hand over the private keys for those pockets, since they're part of the managed architecture.

🌉 6. Wallib as a hybrid wallet: two worlds, one experience

Think of Wallib as a double door:

  • 🔸 On one side, the pure crypto world:

    • Self-custody of your on-chain Bitcoin.

    • Keys under your control.

  • 🔹 On the other, the traditional financial world:

    • USDT with regulated custodians.

    • LN for fast payments.

    • International accounts.

    • A VISA card to spend your crypto in real life. 💳

All of this is in a single app, so you don't have to choose between:

  • 💜 Absolute control (your keys, your rules)

  • 🌍 Convenience and connectivity (fast payments, cards, banks, regions).
