Why it matters
Zero-touch provisioning lets you register a compatible Yealink phone through Whippy using its device details. Once configured, the phone can receive its Business Phone line settings and be managed from Whippy.
Key Concepts
SIP domain: The domain used by the desk phone to register for calling.
Credential list: The SIP credentials associated with the domain.
SIP user: The account assigned to a desk phone line; its password is separate from the user's Whippy login.
SIP extension: A short number assigned to a calling action, such as transferring a call or parking it.
Auto-Provisioning: The Whippy area for assigning a desk phone, managing its provisioning, and checking its status.
MAC address: A unique hardware identifier printed on the phone label.
Step-by-Step: Zero-Touch Provision a Yealink Desk Phone
Prepare the phone. Connect the Yealink desk phone to power and the internet. Note the MAC address and serial number printed on the device label.
Select the correct Whippy organization and Business Phone channel. Confirm which phone line the device should use.
Check the SIP account configuration. In Whippy, go to Settings → Accounts, open the relevant Twilio account, and confirm the SIP domain, credential list, and credential attachment are configured.
Create or select a SIP user. Add a SIP user if needed, give it a SIP username and password, and assign it to the correct Business Phone channel. Use a SIP password rather than the Whippy login password.
Configure extensions if needed. Add extension numbers and labels, choose the action (for example, transfer/new call or park), and select the target. Use provider account scope to make an extension available to phones on the account, or user scope to limit it to a particular SIP user.
Assign the Yealink phone. Open the account's Auto-Provisioning area in Whippy. Choose the appropriate SIP line(s), select the Yealink model, and enter the phone's MAC address. Complete the provisioning flow and check the assignment status.
Check the device status in Whippy. In Auto-Provisioning, open the phone's three-dot menu and select Refresh online status. This checks the status; it does not restart the device.
Restart the phone from Whippy if necessary. From the same three-dot menu, select Reboot and confirm the action. Whippy queues a remote reboot command for the Yealink device. Wait for it to restart and reconnect, then select Refresh online status again.
Test calling. Confirm the phone shows as online/registered, place an inbound test call, and make an outbound test call. Test any configured extension keys as appropriate.
Tips and Best Practices
Double-check the MAC address, model, SIP user, and assigned channel before provisioning.
Refresh online status, Reboot, Force re-provision, and Factory reset are distinct actions in the Whippy Auto-Provisioning menu.
Use Force re-provision only when you need the device to retrieve its provisioning configuration again.
Factory reset is a more disruptive action and should not be part of routine status checking.
After changing extensions, a reboot may be needed for the phone to reflect the updates.
The exact Yealink models supported and whether a particular device requires additional information should be confirmed against the current product configuration.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Possible cause | What to do |
Phone does not appear online | Phone is still booting or not connected | Check power/network, then use Refresh online status in Whippy |
Phone is online but does not register | SIP user or account configuration is incorrect | Verify the SIP user, domain, credentials, and assigned channel |
Updated settings are not showing | Device has not retrieved the latest configuration | Use Force re-provision if appropriate, or Reboot, then refresh status |
Extensions are missing | Extension scope or target is incorrect | Check whether the extension is assigned to the provider account or intended SIP user |
Phone needs a fresh start | Previous configuration is preventing successful setup | Escalate before using Factory reset, which resets the device |
ℹ️ The steps above describe zero-touch provisioning through Whippy, not the separate Yealink web-interface method that requires manually entering a provisioning URL.
